This flew into my window this morning
From what i can make out it's a young greater spotted woodpecker. This happened at around 7.30 and it spent 20 minutes on its back, twitching. It then righted itself and is currently wide awake, stretching its wings, presumably gathering strength.
If it is not gone by mid afternoon I'll call the wildlife rescue service.

What a gorgeous little bird Ive never seen one of these before, I hope he's ok. Nice to see that people care, weve had chavs round our area shooting nesting swans with air rifles

He's in a bird feeding cage at the moment for protection (he can get out, but cats can't get in), and our cat has been shut in all morning - she thought it was Christmas when she saw it, at 17 it's a few years since she caught a bird

Called in the wildlife rescue this afternoon - they will feed it, test its flying in an aviary and bring it back here to release on the basis that it lives around here.
Let's hope its in-built satnav works better next time

Without trying to put a downer on it don't be too surprised if they say it didn't make it. The twitching on it's back is not a good sign. The last bird I took to the rescue centre which flew into the neighbours house did the same thing and died 48 hours later from brain damage.
Hopefully as it's only a young'un it didn't do any lasting damage and just needs a couple of aspirin. Lovely birds to have in the garden and far nicer than Green Woodpeckers.

The last bird I saw go head first in to a window wasn't wearing any underwear and was trying to kill herself.
But I think that's a different thread entirely.
And no, I didn't get photos.

Good thing that the local experts will take over with the bird. Hope it will be alright.
