Default This flew into my window this morning

From what i can make out it's a young greater spotted woodpecker. This happened at around 7.30 and it spent 20 minutes on its back, twitching. It then righted itself and is currently wide awake, stretching its wings, presumably gathering strength.
If it is not gone by mid afternoon I'll call the wildlife rescue service.

Lovely bird, but it does stun them. I had a baby blackbird do the same two weeks ago. I thought it was a goner, but I went out and righted it, then hid it under a bush and an hour later it was gone.

Do watch out for cats though, it's pretty defenceless at the moment.

See a few birds hitting windows when doing my post round, they usually fly around in circles for a minute then crash to the floor.

Could have been worse, this could have "flew" into your window.

What a gorgeous little bird Ive never seen one of these before, I hope he's ok. Nice to see that people care, weve had chavs round our area shooting nesting swans with air rifles

He's in a bird feeding cage at the moment for protection (he can get out, but cats can't get in), and our cat has been shut in all morning - she thought it was Christmas when she saw it, at 17 it's a few years since she caught a bird

That's not red spray, that's the bump on it's head from nutting the window.

Good job he didn't go in bill-first, he'd still be embedded. I know they can do it, I've seen Woody Woodpecker do it on TV

Called in the wildlife rescue this afternoon - they will feed it, test its flying in an aviary and bring it back here to release on the basis that it lives around here.

Let's hope its in-built satnav works better next time

The last bird I saw go head first in to a window wasn't wearing any underwear and was trying to kill herself.

But I think that's a different thread entirely.

And no, I didn't get photos.

Satnav doesn't work very well around here. Keeps sending large lorries down a road which becomes too narrow for a car and the outlet is too tight for anything but a small car. They keep burning their clutches out trying to reverse out uphill!

Good thing that the local experts will take over with the bird. Hope it will be alright.

As Woody would say, "I saw it back when I was only a little Twigpecker".
