It's gonna go that way, but they need to find a pricing point people are willing to pay. Given that they are no longer paying for paper, ink, press's or related staff, or the premises and all related expense for the production of a physical newspaper, the price HAS to come down for a virtual paper. £1 a week subs might be fair, but they must also consider the massive advertising revenue opportunity which should further reduce the end-user cost.

News International has announced that in order to access the Times and Sunday Times sites readers will in future have to pay £1 a day or £2 a week. I wonder how many people will be taking them up on their kind offer

Maybe if they stopped using adverts on the their websites they could justify charging for it. Funny that; As I was under the impression that its the advert revenue is what made the website pay for themselves (IB and Google seem to manage ok on advert revenue)
I mean, third rate journalism these days is ten a penny from any source, so its not exactly a worthy asset, or one worth paying to read (online, at least). Especially when bombarded with adverts at every opertunity.
Murdoch needs a reality check; his son was harping on about their sworn enemy (the BBC) creating unfair competition; Well maybe they should take a leaf out the same book when hogging UKs satelite broadcasting network. This is just another addition to extorting further cash via Murdoch's empire (Sky, papers, etc).
Think for a minute that a TV license costs £142.50 for a year, consider that as a subscription fee to every service offered by the BBC; their news, websites, TV, radio. OK its mandatory and we all have issue with that, but momentarily disregarding that issue, what you do pay goes a very long way IMO.
That being 39p a day for everything! With NO adverts (barring political propaganda )!
Then take a look at what it costs doing it the "Murdoch way" (or what he wants us to do, at least). First to read the Times website; Thats £2 a week (28p per day) just to read a virtual paper Then add on Sky TV which is at its cheapest £18 a month; 59p a day. Plus the newpaper subs makes it 87p a day or £318 a year to enjoy and view Murdoch's empire. And they then have the audacity to hurl adverts at you left right and centre!?!
Yet people still pay for it....

Like so many things in life if people think it is worth it they will subscribe and The Times on-line will make a profit. If they don't it will start making a loss and they will have to rethink their business model. This is how most businesses work.
