AA Battery Charger

AA Battery Charger
Is there such a thing as a battery charger which will switch itself off after the batteries are charged?
At work we have a number of people who use wireless keyboards for which we use rechargable AA batteries for.
They put them in the charger and its left on for days with them in and the other day someone had put them in the wrong way round and they were too hot to take out! We are concerned about it catching fire.

Maplin offer quite a few which have auto shut-off once the batteries are charged:

I'd be concerned about the quality of your charger if it would attempt to charge a battery with the polarity reversed Cheapo Chinese ones are they?
It kind of depends on the battery chemistry but as you mention AA they're most likely to be either Ni-Cd - dated technology that has bad memory problems, self discharge, etc. or Ni-Mh - better technology, capacity etc.
Now the Ni-Cd ones are usually trickle charged so charging takes ages but the chargers use little power. Ni-Mh can be fast charged and exhibit a feature where the voltage starts to drop away as they get full, here an intelligent charger will switch to a low power trickle charge just to top them up - so again very low power / effectively off.
The newest Lithium based batteries can be charged very quickly and once full the charger must shut down completely to prevent damage to them. They do not self discharge.

I always find these kind of answers amusing.
Surely in your life Dave you have come across people who regardless of what training your give them or manuals you give them to read or even the simplest of tasks you give them they still get it wrong, basically because they are just so fecking stupid!

Oh, back to the point of this thread ..... I have a wireless keyboard at home. A Microsoft one. Works for months on normal alkaline batteries. More batteries to dispose of but think of the CO2 that you're not pumping into the atmosphere from not having to charge them .... **

** that is, if you give a fig. Which I wouldn't. But your company may have a 'green' champion that you'd need to get onside .... ***
*** Personally I'd shoot them .....
