BA baggage nightmare
Once again, BA have suffered problems with their baggage system at T5 Heathrow. My OH had to fly out to Nice on business this afternoon - and yes his bag is one of the 1000+ still stuck at Heathrow whilst he is in France.
He has been told by staff at Nice that as he is there for only 3 days, there is no probability that he will get his bag whilst he is there, so they will more than likely forward straight home. He is stuck without clothes, toiletries and major stuff he needs tomorrow for work.. to say it's really foofed things up is an understatement.
Having never been in this situation before, do airlines offer any sort of payment when the baggage stuff up is 100% their problem, so that he can get bits and pieces to cover him until he is home?
Any advice would be great

He should buy some clothes in France. Keep all the receipts, and contact BA when he returns. Don't take the proverbial.

Thanks FM.
NOw here lies another problem. Having spoken to him again, nowhere in France is open on a Sunday night at 10:45pm ( they only just managed to get a meal before the hotel restaurant shut ), and in the wees hours of the morning, he has to be up and on the road to the middle of nowhere where there may be the odd cow or two but certainly no clothes shops etc.. which is why I think he is only going to be able to get essentials from the hotel. Depending what time his day finishes he may be able to find somewhere tomorrow but it's doubtful..
I'll tell him to keep receipts for what he can get though - thanks.

What a nightmare, sorry to hear he is having that trouble
There are limits to what they will reimburse too so be careful spending too much.
3 days though!! What a joke!
I almost lost my baggage too when we arrived. Thankfully immigration let her go after an hour. Phew!

afaik the luggage system is run by BAA not the airlines. As much as possible I fly the Air France/ KLM group, about a dozen times a year, and so far luggage has always turned up.
Oh and the food on KLM flights is edible!

Baggage systems are amazingly complex things. It staggers me that they break as infrequently as they do.
PITA when it happens on your trip though.

Having had my luggage "lost" a few times in the past few years (only once was BA at T5and I missed a connecting flight because of it), if I am going anywhere now for more than one night I always take a spare set of clothing (trousers, shirt and possibly tie), underwear, socks and emergency toiletries (toothbrush, toothpaste, razor and small rool-on type deodorant) with me in the laptop backpack.
Some airlines will give you some money to buy emergency clothing etc, but others jsut tell you to claim off your travel insurance.
In Jakarta I was lucky enough to use a 4 hour laundry service at 2am, and in a remote part of Tunisia I had to wash the clothes I arrived in in the hotel sink every evening and dry it with the hairdryer for 3 days until I was finally re-united with my bags. I've never been so happy to see a clean pair of socks
Since I've started travelling "prepared", I've only ever had luggage mishaps on the journey home, when the suitcase just has stuff needing washed.

Thats what he is going to do in future, John. Even if its just 1 pair of undercrackers, socks and a t-shirt, it's better than the situation he is in now.
I think the work related bits were the main pisser

Emergency solved - BA/BAA managed to get his bag to him today so it was only necessary to turn his pants inside out once
well done BA/BAA for not taking days to get his stuff to him

Amex is useful if you travel a lot. My card lets me spend quite a bit of cash on clean underwear etc after 10hrs if baggage goes missing. If its over 24hrs I think you get to spend pushing a grand...
Glad he got it though
