Default Watch Battery

I happen to have a SWRT watch, and it needed a new battery.

I rang a local Goldsmiths, they asked was it waterproof.
Yes I replied.

She says we'll then it'll need to be sent off to our workshop for fitting.
Cost you about 35.00-40.00 + 5.99 for a battery, take about 10 days.

We'll **** me, I nearly collapsed.

£40 quid for a battery I said?
I asked her could they not just fit the battery in the shop?

Yes, she replied, it'll cost you £5.99 but it won't be waterproof.
I thought to myself - don't you worry your pretty little head about that.

Anyone else this this is crazy?

Its not the battery that costs, as changing it for £5.99 proves, its the fact that that they will have to check/replace the seals etc and any ensure that the integrity of the waterproofing isn't compromised.

This stops you claiming against them for a new watch when the watch starts to fill with water or stops everytime you wash your hands.

I doubt you would have any problems under normal wear, but you MAY have problems if you were to wear it when swimming. You have to decide whether its worth it or not, depending on the value of the watch and whether you swim with it on.

I have a quartz Breitling, so when that needs a new battery it's worth ensuring that the battery is changed properly and the watch is as the manufacturing intended.

The watch wasn't that expensive I don't think - about £100 odd?
It had a fault, which Prodrive very kindly replaced for me FOC after about 2.5 years.

Most of all - I don't swim, so unless I fall in the pool pissed on holiday its probably safe enough

Actually I've just realised, you probably can't actually buy these watches anymore.
The SWRT store is gone along with the team.

Debenhams do a proper sealed battery replacement service for under £20 as do most good smaller watch shops.

LOL, I don't think the OP fancies spending £1K + on an automatic just so he can save £40 on battery replacement every 4 years

But I like your style

I supply and fit watch batteries, with a new seal for £3, to friends and workmates

I buy quality lithium batteries for £5.50 for a box of ten, and my seal kit costs me £12 for a 1000 rings assorted.

WatchDoctors and the like are overpriced to the Max.

For a standard say Seiko Sport 150 it costs me 56p in parts and 15mins labour.

You need the right tools to do the job but I have accumulated these over 15 years, so I have a comprehensive set.

How do you test it though?
Do you dip it in water to see if it leaks?

If so, what do you then do if it has leaked - Hairdryer Job

Most of the watches I am given are water-resistant rather than waterproof.

Water resistant doesnt mean waterproof.

Waterproof means waterproof, and will have a certain safe depth or ATM atmospheric pressure level stamped on it.

I dont test for water ingress on a battery change as there are more seals to a watch than the case back seal, but this I replace as it has been disturbed.

There are also seals in the crystal ring, crown and pushers if fitted.

To properly test a watches water ingress resistance you need to buy a pressure tank, this is filled with water and the lid locks water tight, you place the watch in the tank then you pump the handle to the specified pressure say 5ATM.
You then look at another dial, if the needle stays stable then the watch has passed, if the dial shows loss of pressure then water has entered the watch.

Similar to this setup below....

I bought myself a gucci watch when I turned 21, 8 years ago now.

Now its not as expensive as most of the watch wearers prides in here, however it was expensive for me.

The battery died once in its lifetime, and instead of paying £50 to send it back to gucci to do, I opted for the £5 version. Consequently, the insides have now corroded and it mists up during warm weather - it now no longer works, which is pretty timely (escuse the pun) as this now gives me a decent idea of what to ask the family for my 30th next year!
