Band CO2 (g/km) 12 month standard rate 6 month standard rate
A up to 100 £0 Not Applicable
B 101-110 £35 Not Applicable
C 111-120 £35 Not Applicable
D 121-130 £120 £66
E 131-140 £120 £66
F 141-150 £125 £68.75
G 151-165 £150 £82.50
H 166-175 £175 £96.25
I 176-185 £175 £96.25
J 186-200 £215 £118.25

L 226-255 £405 £222.75
M Over 255 £405 £222.75

Llifted from the DVLA website. The last 6 bands are paired.

May as well put out 500 g per km as 226....

or 121 as 140

(not that I buy into all this Co2 is killing us all nonsense, but it makes a mockery of the "green" budget to thise who do)

A car I fancy has some older models just over 225g/km which nearly doubles the road tax. They could do with more progressive bands at this level, or just make the eco warriors breathe their own CO2 instead.

The whole ved band system makes no sence anyhow. It should be a flat rate for ALL cars. The higher the co/2 the more fuel is used, hence more more spent on fuel and tax.

narrower bands means more progressive pricing.

one day all the bands will have different pricing, just you watch.

either that or somebody needed to justify their job at the DVLA and this was there answer!

It's a road tax, why does the emissions or engine size matter? Should be just a flat rate for each vehicle irispective of any thing else. Of course this government have no common sence

I've no problem paying a tax just as long as it's fair and not too expensive, goes towards the maintanance of the roads. what an absurd idea

It's ok found this

Petrol and diesel cars registered after March 1, 2001
Rate: £215
Next year’s rate: £245
Example car: Porsche Boxster S 3.4-litre petrol
Band K also includes cars which emit more than 225g/km of CO2 but were registered before March 23, 2006.

Agree with lumping it all into petrol duty.

If they insist on VED then why not just have a scale of 1g/km = £1 VED.

Why should my 200g/km car pay much more than a 100g/km car when it only emits twice the CO2. Why should a Lamborghini that emits 400g/km pay the same as my 200g/km car? Just doesn't make sense.

Another thing that really annoys me is, for example, band D is £120 for the full year or pay two sums of £66 every 6 months! Why is it an extra £12 to do it this way? This is the sort of thing they do in retail for god sake!

Why not just charge £1 per gm of C02, so zero road tax for those who bought a farty little hairdryer, they use the roads, let them pay as well.

Remember though, moaning about the government, sure they are inept and wasteful, but look at what they have to deal with, a country full of obese, lazy, feckless, greedy, devious scroungers and they let in every other buggers waifs and strays too, perhaps if the incumbent of this fair land all played a part the government we all moan about may have more to work with and feel less need to batter those who do contribute in every creative way possible.

I am seriously considering getting a pre 1973 classic to avoid some of the costs of running a modern motor, mines only done 300 miles so far this year.

Japanese Imports NOT affected by New Road Tax
2008-05-26

Hi All,

I've finally gotten some clarity on this subject. The government release below dated March 2008 states that the new Road Tax rates will not effect cars that were manufactured before July 2008. Read the statement below:

New Carbon Dioxide (CO2) Motor Tax System
06/03/08
Mr John Gormley, T.D., Minister for the Environment, Heritage and Local Government, today (5 March 07) clarified the position in relation to introduction of the new CO2 based motor tax system. This clarification followed the passing of amendments to the Motor Vehicle (Duties and Licences) Bill 2008 at committee stage of the Bill today by the Dail Select Committee on the Environment, Heritage and Local Government.
Minister Gormley stated that all new cars registered from 1 July 2008 will have their motor tax rate based on the CO2 emissions level. The new CO2 based system will not apply to the import of pre 2008 cars.
New cars registered between 1 January 2008 and 30 June 2008 will initially have their motor tax charged on the basis of the existing engine size (c.c.) system. However, a low CO2 emitting new car registered between 1 January 2008 and 30 June 2008 will have its motor tax switched to the lower CO2 based motor tax rate on first renewal of motor tax post 1 July 2008, when the new CO2 based system commences. New cars which are registered in the first 6 months of 2008 whose tax would be more under the new CO2 based system will continue to pay motor tax on the basis of engine size (c.c.).
"I am pleased to introduce this Committee Stage Amendment which will effectively allow new cars with low carbon emissions into the new emissions based motor tax system post 1 July 2008. The purpose of introducing the emissions based system in the first place was to encourage and incentivise as many people as possible to purchase 'greener cars' Today's amendment will ensure that additional car buyers will benefit from the scheme," said the Minister.
ENDS

This is the case with BMW 335's. The newer models have been tweaked to come in just under 225 co2.
