Default NPower and confusing gas bills !

Anyone clued up on how gas bills are calculated as i've just got off the phone to NPower and i'm totally confused now.

To cut a long story short, they sent a guy out to read our meter a while ago but apparently he didn't pass on the reading ! So although our bills state they were calculated on an actual reading, they say that they weren't and they were estimates.

We had a quarterly bill from them last week for £163.63 which said estimated so we rung them and said we wanted an actual amount as they had just been out to read our meter and gave them a meter reading.

We have just got an amended bill for £253.96 as it takes into account the incorrect readings from when their guy didn't pass on the meter reading and all there other estimates which apparently have been wrong !

I've just said to NPower that because their guy didn't do his job properly that means we suddenly get a big bill and they just replied that they only need to take a meter reading every 18 months !

So,can we request that they don't use estimates and only calculate our bill on actual meter readings ?

Has anyone else had similar problems ?

Hope all this makes sense,i'm typing this in abit of a temper

Go read the meter and phone through the actual readings every quarter, unless there estimate is less than actual of course.

Worth a read

How are my bills calculated?

We've had problems in the past where we've given them a reading and they still send estimates through

What type of meter have you got? dial or electronic? and is there an ‘E’ next to the meter reading on your bill?

Find out the price of gas in your area, use the link and put in your postcode

Prices & discounts

Go read your meter, use this link to help you read your meter

After looking at the links you posted we have a mechanical digital meter. After the meter reading on the latest bill it says customer reading and on the previous one it says estimate.

Also, just looking at my previous bills and the last quarterly bill from October 2008 says it is calculated from an actual meter reading.

When I explained that to NPower they said it was actually estimated and that's why the current bill is now so high But it says in black and white that it's calculated from a meter reading !

Npower Good luck! Tried changing to them in early December - it took them two attempts realise that the meter and postal addresses should be the same, they then 'lost' our meter serial number and subsequently wanted us to wait another month having already waited six weeks.

Needless to say we told them where to go.
