BT Question...
Bit random for a car forum, but thought someone may know....
When I moved in to my flat, I had a phone line in to the house, and it was dead. I was told that I had to go with BT for 1 year, as they 'activate' the line etc. They wanted to charge me £125 for this, but I ended up getting it free.
Anyway, my mate has moved in to a new house, and has the line there, but not active. He is convinced he doesnt have to phone/be involved with BT at all, which I'm sure he does for 1 year. As he is thinking of going with the Post Office for line rental/phone/internet.
But I'm sure right off he can't can he?? Probably after a year he could......
Anyone shed any light?

I only got mine just over a year ago (am moving to a different company soon). But thought for the 1st year it had to be BT....as they were the only ones who could activate and give you a number?

2 years ago when we move BT allowed you to take out an account then cancel it after a month or so without penalty, it may be that has changed but the 12months line thing is years old tbh.
As said above you should be able to go elsewhere for the service but I am myself not sure if BT don't have to switch it on first to provide you witht he initial number so the other providers can take it off them.

If you dont have a line at all, ie nothing from the pole then it "may" be different but i still feel you dont have to go with BT, just pay them for the installation because all the street furniture is theirs and only their people are insured to work on it.
So no, your not tied to BT, just the installation.

What Sky TT & others DONT tell you is:
If you take line rental with them, they cancel your contract with BT.
Should you ever leave, or want to go back to BT, then its another £125 line
activation fee.

We were with BT when we moved and then switched to TT after our contract was up we switched back to BT and it didn't cost anything extra.
