More Labour underhandedness.
Just before Christmas, Labour ministers sold the government's 1/3 stake in the Atomic Weapons Establishment at Aldermaston, to an American company.
The sale was OK'd by ministers, who didn't bother to ask, or tell parliament.
They simply announced it just before parliament broke up for the Christmas recess.
MPs are said to be furious about that, and further annoyed that the sale appears to have been done on the cheap, in order to realise money quickly for the government.
Anyone out there STILL think we should trust them?

As far as I can see is it was a commercial sale.
BNFL have sold to Jacobs of California.
The UK Government own the 'Golden Share' which means it can take it all back into public ownership in an instant.
So, yes, our Nuclear Warhead Design and Build is being run by 2 US Companies and 1 UK Company (SERCO).

Same old Labour.
- flies in the face of keeping control of our nuclear weapons and technologies (majority owned by the US now!)
- stupid time to be selling a business or shares as they'll have got poor value for them in the current climate (oh, hang on, that didn't stop the sale of our gold reserves, did it?)
- the value and tactical nature of this asset means it should have been reported properly to the house of commons - not come out as a paragraph on BNFL's website!
Unfortunately this once again proves that we don't live in a democracy - politicians are accountable to nobody.

Also raises the question that if US Nationals can have access to our nuclear research, keeping in mind the likely classification of some of it - it would be nice for them to respond in kind with the release of data about various bits of military equipment that we keep saying we're going to buy (before Labour does its usual trick of postponement and cancellation of large procurement projects).
I can't help wonder what we get, exactly, from this "special relationship", other than a sore ****.
I'm just grateful that when it comes to operating on the ground, the US/UK relationship isn't hindered by dumb civil servant bureaucrats on both sides of the Atlantic, because we just get on with it.

One of the conditions of buying trident (our sole nulear deterrent) was that we have complete freedom to use it as and when we see fit. The US wanted us to have to OK useage with them first initially, but the UK government refused to accept this.
