Rats
We have two elderly Spaniels who potter about in our garden. Recently I have seen one, possibly two, rat/s running about. I think they have been attracted to windfall apples.
So what's the best way of getting rid of them obviously bearing in mind a couple of nosey dogs. Is there any particular disease that they bring that might put the dogs at risk that we should look out for? Thanks, David

try one of them ultrasonic devices David, im sure they are cat / dog friendly !!
failing that, prance around the garden with a recorder and entice them into a lake with a rendition of london's burning...

The best way is bait boxes full of poison but any stray mice and shrews may get taken out as well. Another good one is a gas box, its a little bait box that flips shut when the rat goes in and uses CO2 to poison the rat which means you actually get to see the rats you catch so you know how effective it is. Any bait system can take a while though as they are suspicious of new things and you have to place them in the right places to make sure they enter.

Thanks chaps
Should give some ideas to go with. I phoned the vet who said the Council do a freebie service. Well they don't, it's £37 but the pest control guy was quite helpful and they use fancy boxes with solid bait. I think just an industrial version of what I can get in a country store.
And no "I have 3 pet rats - leave 'em alone" messages (yet )
Perhaps I should hire a Jack Russell for a few days?

Well I don't know what they are after. Rubbish and food waste are in closed wheelies. Other goodies are in shed which they can't access. No bird food around. Just plants and grass otherwise unless they eat fish
I've just put down a test apple to see if that goes!!

We have a very large cat which I call the elephant. The first rat which appeared in the garden after we got him never knew what hit him. We have not seen another rat since!

We've got an apple tree in our garden and this big fella decided to move in next to our septic tank. The Cats were terrified of him
Got the local Rat Man out from the Council, twice. Ratty was still hanging about weeks after
Not seen him since we got the dog
