That was because a Sheffield stainless mill had been bought by some asset stripping foreigners (lets see how we fare when the price of steel dips and they have excess capacity).
EON have every intention of building a renewable energy power station there: where will the sh*te farm be moved to though?

Used to be happy to see them on my way back from london as it meant i was not to far from home!
it was like the first little bit of the "norf" i would recognise on the monthly trip up and down the uk`s main vein
edit, just looked on that linked page from this thread and its saying pretty much what i just said LOL

The pair of giant cooling towers looming over the M1 as you pass Sheffield certainly signify your arrival in what I consider The Proper North.

I've been hearing all sorts about the towers blowing:
Using two series of explosives as the fear is that one large one will rock the bridge too much and make it unsafe
the £16 million spent on the bridge was to make it strong enough to take the impact of the towers hitting the ground when they are demolished
and finally one mate said that an construction engineer advised him to not go on the bridge if he could help it (local Rotherham lad) as it was always safer to NOT drive on the M1 at that point....

Either be at the top dropping on someone, or be at the bottom and have a million tons of rubble, people, cars, lorries and God knows what else drop on you.
