Mountain Bike Recommendations?
Hi,
I'm considering buying a bike for the 8 mile run along the canal to work. Being away from bikes from 10+ years, my knowledge in the area is zero (Look pedals and dura ace is my limit!).
Any recommendations or advice, I dont want to break the bank here. Likewise I dont want junk! Whats important?? Disk brakes, suspesion, etc, makes to avoid??
Any help appreciated!
Matt.

E-bay is your friend, here.
Decent makes like Scott, Orange, Marin, Specialised, Giant, Kona, Trex, Cannondale, etc etc, all around 2 years old and some real bargains.
DON'T bother with full suspension.
DON'T bother with disc brakes unless they are a good make, (Hope, Shimano, etc),
DO look for decent specced equipment, Shimano, Mavic, etc.
Look for BETTER Shimano stuff, they increase in spec as follows:
Tourney, Acera, Alivio, STX, LX, XT, XTR.
Shimano V-type brakes are excellent.

May I suggest a chopper. Will you need to get it into a car?

If you are happy to buy a previous year's model, Pauls Cycles is good for a juicy discount.

I have gone for a Hybrid for the work run, its due in a week or two, starting tomorrow on my road bike, my Mountain bike it rubbish on road , heavy, chunky tyres and suspension, its all overkill for most commute type situations and the road bike is a bit delicate for the odd track hence the Hybrid, I am hoping I can just get by with one bike.
I have gone for a Cannondale Bad Boy 700 which is rigid with reasonably narrow wheels but it has Avid juicy 3 disk brakes, I like the reassurance of disks, not so much the power as rim brakes can be pretty good, more the fact they are consistent regardless of the weather.

If you don't intend to be doing much off-road I would suggest one of these hybrid type bikes. Its not a drop handle sadle like a razor blade and its not a heavy mountain bike.
Mate has a Genesis Day 1 and its great for light road use.
Having said that, my partner and I both have mountain bikes. I've got a Genesis Core 1 and the wife has a Gary Fisher Marlin GS.
