How is an investigation into a corrupt System run by a corrupt an incompetant representative a waste of money?
Red Ken never spent a penny with the benefit of the people of London in mind. So far every move by Boris seems to have been to rectify Livngstones corrupt dealings. Money well spent as far as I'm concerned.

Because it's simply cheap politics. There's no chance the council will get any of the money back, and no chance they can recover it from the people concerned. All the evidence suggests the issue was politics and a degree of incompetence, but only limited signs that any laws got broken. Basically standard council politics, but on a larger scale because they had more money. You can bet that by the end of his first term, BJs cronies will be just as guilty, because all local councils are more or less corrupt. All this is about is trying to tar the local Labour party to make sure Boris gets re-elected next time. If they can make the mud stick to the Parliamentary party in the run-up to the General Election, so much the better.

It isnt cheap politics though. The conservative party may relish the results, but either way: theyre obliged to audit where evidence of misappropriation exists.

thats the sort of attitude that got us into this mess - if you never investigate and punish people for wrong doing, then you're just going to get more and more problems - lock em up

If your wages department said 90% of your salary was going to help homeless orphans, and you found it had gone on sending the boss and his mrs on a round the world cruise how would you feel?
Anyone can have good intentions, and make bold sweeping statements on how there going to put the world to right, or improve the quality of life for others.
(the pensioners free swimming springs to mid) ,
good sentiment which you all agree with.
now dive below the statement (no pun intended)
This is hypothetical BTW
1) Who is going to fund it?
2) How are swimming pools going to prove how many pensioners came to swim?
3) (This is where the money can be lost) A "new" monitoring system will be installed (pensoswim) cost £1bn money well spent the spin tank say.
4) Figures back from pensoswim plc, ( now a private organisation, which requires funding etc) show that 1000 pensioners used the free swimming: cost £2000
5) Administration & accounting charges to pay all those registered swimming pools £100,000
6) After the first set of figures come in, its found that to recover the costs, each swimming pool must have at least 100 pensioners swimming a week, or they have to subsidise the set up costs.
7) The swimming pools say 200 pensioners swam each week, regardless of whether they do or not, thus avoiding being hit for the set up funding.
8) No checks on whether pensioners swim or not, no figures released on the total costs involved.
total cost over £1bn with a net return of £0
money well spent now?
ts not the spending of the money thats the issue, its how well its spent.

also, their investigations will also prompt the tories themselves into toeing the line a bit more....
hope there are a few convictions here to set the precedent for the future. Its the only way.
