FAO Flightman or any other plane spotter
Was flying out of Stuttgart and was looking at all the runway markings and decided I needed to find out what they meant.
what does 25-07 CAT II/III mean?
or at LHR, 29RCATI/II/III
and various outher things that I have forgotten.
Also how do they decide which plane takes off next?
we followed a 747 to the end of the runway where it waited, there were 4 approaches to the end we waited at with the plane to our left which arrived after us took off first, the 747 waited to our right and we took off before it!!
Surely it should be a first come first served and merge system, but it obviuosly isn't.
sad questions I know but I am just curious thats all.

Yeah stick a zero on the end and it's the compass heading. If it has an L or an R on the end it means left or right as it has parallel runways.
CAT rating is something to do instrument only approaches.

I love flying
25-07 are the runways . . .Minus two , Plus two will always give you the reciproocal number of the runway . . .Meaning . . 25 . .2-2=0 . . . 5+2=7 . . . So runways in use as per magnetic heading 250 and 070 . . .
Cat I,II, III are instrument approaches in use . . .The are slave to particular on board equipment tolerances and minimums descent/decision altitude of an approach . . ..
. . . Hope this helps . . .

As said its compass headings. At LHR we have 2 strips of concrete, so 4 runways. 27R/27L both heading west so 270 degrees. And 09L/09R heading east 90 degrees.
Cat I/II/III is used for instrument landings and references the equipment needed on the airfield and the aircraft.
