Don't know about the "not mega bucks" thing as I don't know what you consider mega bucks but here's a few of my favourites:
Most expensive at the top
Gaucho, next to Kendals. Absolutely the best steak in Manchester. Fairly pricey but worth every penny. Steak is about £18-£25, veg, potato's chips are all extra on top just so you know. Ask to see the steak board before you order I guarantee you will have a good meal.
Lounge 10, Tib Lane near the Town Hall. My favourite restaurant in Manchester. Top atmosphere, without a doubt the best place to take a potential date or even wife . It's totally unique and the top floor is very cool so you should request a table up there. It has a burlesque feel to it, with the top floor painted in quite graphic (pornographic) renaissance art. Very cool place. Excellent food, fairly priced and like I say, completely unique.
Restaurant Bar and Grill, John Dalton Street. Cool modern restaurant, number one destination for Manchester's "celebs". Great food, especially the fish and chips . There is one of these in Leeds too, so if you have been there you will know what to expect.
Stock - Norfolk Lane near Spring Gardens. Manchesters old stock exchange turned into a restaurant. Cool building, decent food, even if some of it is a bit pretentious.
Grill on the Alley, off John Dalton Street. Cheaper version of the restaurant bar and grill. Best thing I have had in there was a Kobe burger. Nice enough.
Picollino's near Albert Square. Good italian, all the staple stuff and always busy.
Room, top of King street. Part of the chain, worth going for the building alone. Food is pretty good and well priced.
If you fancy a Chinese, most people go for the Yang Sing, but Pearl City in China town is just as good and a little cheaper. For Indian it has to be Akbars but go early as it is always packed. There is a Sapporo Teppanyaki on Liverpool road that does good Japanese food. Sapporo has a great atmosphere as the food is cooked in front of you by a very talented ninja.
If you are after fish, then Livebait on Albert Square is good.
There are loads more worth trying, but these are my favourites. Pick any one of the top three and I am sure you will have a good night and a great meal.

However, i had my card cloned in chinatown in a very good eatery, pay cash would be my advice, sure not all are bent but a transient workforce or low paid staff.

Which EastzEast did you go to, the one on Blackfriars is not quite as good as the one on Princess St for some reason, despite it being newer.
