Fox didn't give the Strause brothers a good budget ($35-40m) - but you could argue you don't need a big budget to make a masterpiece. Don't forget that this is also their first film as directors.
30 mins (character development + extended fight scenes) was cut from the film, which was down to Fox. It was the script that let it down - blame Shane Salerno for that. Fox only picked him because the average domestic gross from one of Shane's scripts is $117m. AvP-R has grossed $128m. Fox don't give a **** about the fans, they just want the $$$$$$$.
It's the same with the DVDs for this film. 6-8 extra mins have been 'added' to the film. Then you get the following on the R2 DVD:
- Audio Commentary By Directors Colin And Greg Strause and Producer John Davis
- Audio Commentary By Tom Woodruff and Alec Gillis
- Building The Predator Homeworld (6m 35s)
- Fight To The Finish: The Making of AvP-R (12m 13s)
- Science of the Hunter (10m 44s)
- The Nightmare Returns - Creating the Aliens (7m 33s)
- Science of the Xenomorph (11m 16s)
- Deleted Scenes (19m 52s)
- Crossbreed: The PredAlien (8m 19s)
- Primitive Design: Creating the Predator (10m 24s)
- Prepare For War: The Making of AvP-R (15m 50s)
Scripts for AvP 3 and Predator 3 are in circulation so let's see what Fox comes out with next in the franchise. The Strause brothers want at least $110-115m for an AvP 3. I'm hoping Fox go back to the Predator franchise as there's a lot more potential with that.

If they'd spent 30 more minutes 'developing' those characters I'd have walked out of the cinema. The cast was the weak point IMHO. Not one memorable character or performance, and any film which is built around American teenagers is usually awful. Once the action started it improved, and it was fun seeing all those you'd begun to hate get picked off. More of that might have lifted my rating of it. I have still to give it another watch, but it's been on my HDD for several weeks now and I just haven't mustered any inclination to put it on. All the extra's won't make the DVD any more interesting and I'll probably just wait until I can get it for £3 or so, which I don't think will be a long time.

Interesntingly they used the same actors for the Alien & Predator as they did in previous films
Character development would have been wasted anyway unless you really wanted to care about them, I know I didnt and was more on the Predator & Alien's side, same with the first film, for me personally its gone a bit like the Hellraiser series whereby Pinhead has become the hero not the throwaway characters that get bumped off
One of the actors was Michelle Dessler from 24 too, so not all teenagers

But do you really need a great cast in an Aliens vs. Predator film? I agree, I didn't really care about any of the characters, I was more interested in Aliens and Predators ripping into each other.
Memorable characters? Nope, didn't get any. It did need need at least one; maybe they should've thrown in Bill Paxton? One line in the film that cracks me up is when Dallas shouts: ''people are dying, we need guns!''
