Default Virus help

Please help

I have a PC that's acting very weird and can't find out what's causing it. It's a windows 2000 fully patched pc that's in a workgroup. It has AVP free virus software, I got the message that some .exe files contained viruses (Tanatos.m and win32.heur).
Doing some research Tanatos.M virus is the bugbear virus (AVP call it that) I ran the Bugbear fix from Symantec but can't find it on the system.
The win32.heur virus is found by AVP and is a hueristic (sp) way to find viruses and is possibly a false positive.
The PC is acting weird it's saying the shard drive is full sometimes and other pc's connecting to it lose the connection. I have had to remove AVP as it was putting an exe file that I use in the Virus vault and not giving me access to it.
I have also done a full online virus scan with trend micro. This did not pick up any viruses but did pick up some spyware. The PC does not seem to let me go to any online virus checkers now and I can't seem to even download some trialware from it.

Why? it's still fully supported by Microsoft.

When I did a fresh install of Windows 2000 then tried to get it fully up to date with patches it was riddled with viruses within seconds of connecting to the net. Maybe I didn't go the right route but it seemed it was very open to me.

needs to be done behind a hardware firewall.

You should be able to slipstream most of the SP's & patches onto an install cd.
