Good photos
I went to Venice when I was about 16. Too young to appreciate it really. I'm planning on taking my wife there for a weekend break on her birthday next Jan. Any tips?

the atmosphere of carnivale is really very special and a world apart from any other venice visit.
so go on the *first* carnivale weekend over the whole of saturday and sunday.
There are usually a few Masked ***** on on the saturday night and this makes for an extra special weekend. Ours was the "The Wedding of Figaro of W. Amadeus Mozart"

And we stayed in the Hotel Ca' Dei Conti, less than 10 mins walk from San Marco. Small room but friendly and fully functional. recommended.

3 nights for £800 and the ball was £420. They hire out costumes which put ours to shame for £230 a day, but we rented ours in london for £60 a week lol

Nimbus, when you get a hotel, all you need is something in Venice proper, not the place 10 mins away on the mainland. All of it is beautiful, you don't need to go to San Marco.
We went at end of Dec, really nice, got a foggy night which was fantastically atmospheric. I heard not to go in summer as the water stinks.
If you simply assume you'll get ripped off for a gondola ride, it makes it slightly less painful.
Spoke to one receptionist in a hotel who let us change our baby's nappy there, after three riverside restaurants had refused to let us use their loos for that. He said the place is basically a Disneyworld, there is something crazy like 10 new hotels opening every WEEK. "Real" people can't afford to live there, all the workers commute in, even if they were born there.
It's one of the most popular tourist locations on the planet, and the mindset of the businesspeople usually matches that. Start with that in mind and it's not so bad. Despite many disappointments, I think we can say that we loved it.
Tip for parents with toddlers - don't bother with a pushchair, take a baby rucksack thing. There are steps up and down bridges every fifty yards, you spend more time lifting the pushchair than pushing it.
