Hope lies in the Proles.
Given current world events and media manipulation coupled with public kow towing of idiotic Government policies. Is it not time we the Proles woke up?

Yeah, it's a case of cut off your nose to spite your face though. The damage done if we all stopped paying tax for a while would cripple the country. It'd have to be pretty damn bad for that to need to happen.

And this is the all-important point. It is an ILLUSION. State power is only effective as long as those subject to it "believe" in it. The state has no power except what we grant it. Its power is derived from our willingness to give up our own power. Thus, the state's primary role is to instill in its subjects the idea that it is absolutely necessary, and that without it, life would be miserable and chaotic (like present-day Iraq, perhaps!).
State education, manipulation and control of the media, spin, censorship, fear-mongering, doomsday scenarios, mass hysteria, religious symbolism and "grand visions," are all tools of the state--in its constant quest to maintain control over people. And if that doesn't work, well there's always tear gas, guns and tanks!

It all depends on what situation you are in.
If you of such mind, one can "use" the state to one's means. I.e Benefits scrounger. Nice council house thanks to a like-minded 16yr old up the duff. Disability claims to avoid working etc.
And don't forget the criminals: when you don't subscribe to the state's laws, you don't pay by them either. It's a gamble, but a clever criminal doesn't get caught - only the stupid ones. It's simply a matter of keeping one step ahead.
These are the people the state serves. It's the ones the state wishes it could control, but equally they are the ones that make the highest mockery of it.
The people who suffer are the ones who follow its rules through and through: they work and pay all their taxes EXACTLY how the inland revenue want. Often overpaying it - which LOTS of people inadvertantly do (due to reliance on accountants who only look after their own interests - not their clients). Realise this and try and claim back that overpayment, its not easy. In fact I'd say they intentionally make it as difficult as possible.
These are our workers. The ones who support the system. Pay into for all their lives reaping little reward. The ones that suffer by it, and the ones that are oppressed by it.
But what of the rich people?...Surely their higher income will help the coffers give us a better utopia. Ha ha . Of course not, they employ top line IFAs and accountants, to minimise tax burden and maxmise income from their own wealth and wealth alone. Be it foreign investment or taking advantage of every undeclared loophole (before they get closed). Sure, not everything can be legally evaded, but if ever gets to such a critical point: there is always another country to move to.
If your a law abiding worker, what gain can one even think of getting by following the state's every single wish? Even though the worker is the majority, yet the majority is who is most disadvantaged. Proof if ever, that the system only supports the people who run it, and the ones who refuse to abide by it.

It's not all that gloomy, Les, I knock about with a lot of happy, contented people. We certainly need to guard against an already sizeable state becoming bigger, but I remain optimistic that Orwell's brilliant but gloomy words were a warning, rather than a prophecy.

Evening James. It's the greed and clamour for ever more by those in power which is so nauseating. 'Dubya's' words when addressing a group of his cronies. 'Some people call you the Elite, I call you my base'. This is coming from someone who is arguably the most powerful man on the planet.

I fear that when the Eu has got total control of our country, which won't take too long now since the "red lines" will soon be scrubbed out of existence, we will no longer have a vote which means anything so we will be democratic only in name, we will certainly be very rigidly ruled and any sign of stepping out of the Eu line will be very positively dealt with. We have not seen the true character of these people yet, and I don't think we will like what we see in the future. We have to bear in mind that our lives will no longer be our own!
