Hi,
As it now looks as if I,ll be doing a full seasons rallying this year(navigating mostly),i'll need a helmet and 3 layer race suit.Could anyone recommend a good model of helmet and suit and where to buy.Want to keep the cost low without compromising safety.
Cheers

I use Demon Tweeks - tel: 01978 664466 - good mail order
For Nomex 3 race suit try Sparco 5 or OMP Trend 2
Helmet try Sparco Pro Rally (open face, expensive but has built in Peltor intercom )or Sparco Pro Jet

hope this helps

With helmets your best of driving down to Demon Tweeks or Grand Prix Racewear and trying a few on as some helmets will fit you much better (and safer) than others.

I went to the Autosport show on saturday with the intention of buying a nice OMP or Bell XL helmet for about £250. Neither of them fitted at all well pinching my head at the top and too loose around my face. Then tried an Arai on and the fit was perfect. Sods laws meant it was £400 of course but if I'd gone mail order I would have been stuffed with an ill fitting helmet as you're only allowed to return it for a different size/type of helmet ONCE.

Incidentally, for rallying the new Stilo helmet looks quite cool - McRae is now using one and its got a cool pull down dark visor like a fighter pilots!

Good luck.

Cheers for the info Marc.I,ve just checked out a place about 4 miles from where I live (Montgomery Motorsport)and they do a good range at prices cheaper than Demon Tweeks.

SD, motorcyle helmets are cheaper (because they're made in thousands, not dozens), they don't carry VAT and come in a wider range of sizes.

Cheers Richard.
The type of intercom we get I suppose will have an influence on the helmet?

I got my race helmet from a motorcycle shop. The chap recommended Shoei for value/price.

I have a very comfy open face for around 70 quid

SD - the real answer this time - Take the advice above and try a large number before you buy. All motorcycle helmets are built to a good standard, so the price only reflects brand name and pose value. Full face is probably safer, but can restrict you preipheral vision marginally. Most motorcycle helmets have a good ear space, so any intercom should fit any helmet. If you are feeling really flush, get one with a built in ear speaker, as the ear piece can get irritating after a while. (I suppose you wont be wearing it for hours at a time, so this might not matter)
