well guys after much nashing of teeth and muchos swearing i am now at a point where :

CS works online IF i set it to Software Mode ?

as soon as i choose D3D it hangs as soon as i join a server with the soundlooping problem !

so i'm looking to check drivers for both my SB Live (seems to be a known problem with SB cards and AMD) and my Ge Force Pro.

thanks to HH yesterday i found the SB Livewire drivers. also found some Detonator Drivers.

so tonite when i get home from work i will try these.

at the moment its stable enough for me to say its only CS which does not work !!! Played Kingpin online np. and various things standalone.

if only i had stayed with intel. wish i had.

so if i get it sorted is anyone around tonite / tomorrow for a game on the locked server ?

try downloading the new and the old versions of DirectX, these should sort your problem out. Have you tried using the OpenGl video mode?

HH : old ver of direct x will not help cos u cant uninstall the newer one !!!

funny you mention opengl, gonna try that tonite. gotta download the glsetup file though.....82 mb

Which version of the Detonator drivers are you using. Personally I've found 12.90 best for my GeForce 2 (and athlon/via chipset etc)

yep checked the counter-strike forums

also the BW ones and i've posted in their as well.

2185_Win9x.exe - got this from creative yesterday deano. says its based on Detonator

the other file is a bit older date wise - 1290_Win9x.zip - but is the one you are talking about ?

which one should i use ? mine is only a GeForce Annihilator Pro 32mb.

oh and the 80mb gl file is coming down nicely currently.....

always read that they recommend you get the proper ones from the company who supplied the hardware ?

I gave up on the Elsa ones for my card a long time ago. May miss out one or two bells and whistles but the Nvidia ref drivers in my experience are more stable.

Normaly the drivers that are supplied with the cards lag behind the nvidia release. Currently on my 5th nvidia card and have always used the reference drivers from http://www.nvidia.com.

Steve, if the sb card is not installed and still having problems its not a sb live issue! Also the problems your on about are with the via chipset and sb live (reports say sb are the problem) and nothing to do with AMD cpus that rock

yeah but amd doesnt rock (IMHO)if the m/b chipset is flaky in conjunction with other hardware ?

i never had these problems with intel stuff.

But you are using a 2 year old chipset Steve! P4's do not work with Intel LX chipsets!

Steve - As HH said, does OpenGL work? IMHO is better to run in OpenGL rathter directx for CS. This way I can max out my card with NVMax for OpenGL ie 64tap, Quincunx without having to change the setting when I play other more demanding games.

Steve - just tried directx and guess what, CS crashes! but Software and OpenGL are rock stable.
I have a 1.4G AMD with Sound Blaster live, and GF3 running on Win2KPro

Didn't see that corner coming , took your suggestion of leaving work and going home. Made it back now , plenty corners on the way back as well .
