Default Dubai

Just had a fantastic job offer from my old boss in Dubai and me and the girlfriend are seriously thinking of moving out their and taking the job.

Sell the car rent the house out, worst thing would be giving up the dog though

Anyone here ever been or currently working their at the moment?

Friend commuted from just outside Edinburgh to Dubai for 4 years ...

Flew out on a Sunday and returned every Thursday

Saved him uprooting his kids from school and his wife from her job etc .....

That way you could keep your dog

Just got back after a year out there.
Bit of background
I am in my early 40's, partner and two young kids.

Ok then.
I am back in the uk because my partner liked Dubai but not enought for her to want to give up her good job in the UK. It would be hard for us both to come back to find jobs quickly.

Make sure your salary/package is excellent, Dubai is not classed as a hardship posting anymore so not the perks on offer there once was.
You will pay for
Schooling
Healthcare
Housing

Working there.
Pay is tax free unless you return in undr a calendar year, you need to let the IR know.

Housing
Expensive. I rented 1br in a 2br house in a nice location for £ 850.00 per month.
Renting a 3br villa anywhere nice can set you back 17-24k per annum payable in advance or by 2-3 cheques upfront. so you will need money oin your pocket ulness the company will stump it up or they pay your acomms.

Food and drink
Cheaper (generally than the UK) you can buy booze once you are on a residents visa, usually takes 3-6 months to get one. You can buy 90% of the products you can in the UK.
Booze is expennsive everywhere.

Cars cheap
Ford Mustang GT500 with toys £ 18,000.00 new with 3 yr warranty
Hummer H3 £ 16,000.00
Pertol 67p per gallon

Working week Sun-Thurs

Phones calls expensive, no skype.

Lot of stuck up expats who are more concerned as to what you do as a job raher thwn who you are as a person.

Lot of racisim towards the Indian/Pakistaini/Pillipino workers who keep the country ticking over, treated like slaves in some cases.

Roads are death-traps - i had one near miss every day.

To sum up
Package needs to be real good to support a decent lifestyle.
Roads and streets not paved with gold, long hurs and hard work.
Hardly anything is finished, things get dug up and changed all the time.
Not much to do byut drink, hardly anly culture, galleries/theatre
Dusty as hell all the time, lots of pollution
Great for watersports, lots of sport in general
Summer is too hot to do anything 50 degrees outdors
Good place to experience.
Schools - some good, some not so pick carefully.
Pretty safe, little crime but roads are a nightmare.
Traffic jams in Dubai town are just the worst, can take 3 hours to do 3 miles when busy which is 7-7.
Lots of Russian and Chinese hookers
No tollerence for Drink drivers, DD and do time
No tollerence for drug misuse

PM me if you want more info

Tax free, well paid, tax free, and the united kingdom of sh!te is a mere 7 hour flight away if for some bizarre reason you miss the place.
Not exactly the other side of the world.... go for it.
