No statutory right to time off for bereavement, at the employers discretion...

Why shouldn't it be?

If you are that bothered, take holiday or unpaid leave.

That's to be negotiated with the employer: if they're the kind to refuse reasonable leave under those circumstances, then I'd be considering a change of workplace! That said, it's the last thing you'd want to consider when bereaved. Something to remember for the future though.

Perhaps if they got stroppy your friend could consider going to an employment tribunal....again, not exactly the kind of thing one wants to entertain when bereaved though!

Cheers for all your help chaps!!

As for this comment 'SUB' it doesn't help trying to spark controversy when all I am seeking is clarification to my original question.

Not my bereavement but If I can help then I will do so.

Regards

Esh

We gave 3 days leave for immediate family, any longer than this holidays could be used.

Non immediate family holidays could be used or unpaid leave.

I had almost 2 weeks off (10 days) in total when my dad died a few months ago as I had to sort everything out.

Don't think my place normally like giving that much but they said as I had no leave left they'd do it. They could have jsut said yeah that fine, not mentioned the leave thing and they'd have sounded a lot nicer people

I think most companies allow 3 days compassionate for immediate family.. if they don't usually what happens is the employee goes off sick for two weeks due to emotional stress or something similar!
