Does anyone here read Chinese?
I assume it's Mandarin, rather than Cantonese. (Maybe they're the same, I dunno...)
We have a document framed on our wall, about A0 size, in two languages - old Mongolian script and Chinese. We can't read either and don't know anyone who can. People come and say "Wow, what's that?" and we have to say we don't know. Looks rather official at that size though. I would say it is either an agreement of some sort (contract? land?) or a law written in two languages for the population of Inner Mongolia. But that's a real guess. The Chinese is about 250 characters in I think 4 vertical lines.
I know there are some people of Chinese descent on SN. Is anyone willing to receive a few photos by email (it's long and thin, so I'd have to send the top, middle and bottom) and let me know what it's about? Direct translation would be fantastic, but I'd be happy just with the gist of it.
thanks
Brendan

I can't read Chinese so can't help, sorry. I'd guess that it's Mandarin because of the Mongolian text Brendan mentions... so less likely to be a southern chinese form I'd have thought. And if it's old it's probably traditional characters rather than the simplified ones used now.

Just take it down to your local chinky - I'm sure they'll be happy to translate and you can pickup some sweet and sour chicken and spring rolls while your there

Wurzel, wwp8, I would appreciate that, can you pm me your emails? I can send it as two photos, top and bottom, probably about 3MB each so yahoo/hotmail boxes perhaps unadvisable
Many thanks.
It's expected to be at least 60 yrs old as that's when they stopped using old Mongolian, at least for official documents.
