Seems very disappointing about the way the UK government treat veterans compared to the USA.
The lack of military hospitals in this country compared to over 200 in the US,the Gurkhas not being paid pensions, medical bills and just the lack of mental and physical care given to veterans.

I find it very disappointing that after a full career in the RAF that the day I left I was no longer eligible to enter the Mess or even to shop at the NAAFI shop. It is as though I was never in the RAF at all. The Services' attitude towards ex members is little short of disgraceful!

I think it is fair to say that peoples treatment after they leave the forces is only as good as their Regimental Association.
There is no "official" line regarding ex-servicemen which is sad; especially sad when, for example, servicemen leaving the forces are not automatically entitled to local housing authority housing because they are considered to be voluntery unemployed, and so go to the bottom of the pile of dole scroungers, immigrants, 16yo mothers and the like... makes you wonder why you bother sometimes.
Mind you - the general public opinion towards the Armed Forces in this country bearly registers about "couldn't give a f*£k" usually, especially when you see how members of the US Military are treated by the American public.

It's embarrassing how well veterans and serving personnel are treated in the USA compared to over here. I have lost count the amount of beers, discounts good will gestures etc that i have been offered when on detachment either in America or with the Americans. Thankfully i haven't been in the situation to have to rely on the RAF to look after me after any operational injuries but after reading reports it learning, about the reduction /closure of military hospitals i wonder whether anything has improved since the Falklands. I'm sure a few of you will have watched Tumbledown, apparently that gave a pretty accurate assessment of the quality of care on offer when they returned.
