LCD or Plamsa ?
What's the stance on LCD or plasma ?
My Sony Trinitron is getting a bit erm old, (in tv standards) and I can't do what I want which is to store movies on networked hard disk and connect Mac Mini to TV to play DIVX movies ....so the plan is to change to LCD..
Found this which in my mind looks OK, but it's LCD. Folks at work say avoid plasma cos of the limited life span of 5 years. Is this complete bollox though ?
Amazon.co.uk: Sony KDL32V2500 - 32" Widescreen Bravia HD Ready LCD TV - With Freeview - Black: Electronics & Photo
Any views much appreciated.

It is bollocks.
Most plasmas these days will run for 60000 hours.
Yes the first gen stuff was poor but not now. You would be lucky for a tube to run 60000 hours.
To put this into perspective, if you watched 10 hours of tv per day it would last you over 16 years.

Personally I would go for a good plasma over lcd as there is still a difference, especially in the larger sizes. Lcd is getting there but generally you still get a bit of motion blur.

LCD.
My 40" LCD has no hint of motion blur whatsoever.
You only have to browse AV Forums for about 10mins to see that "screen burn" on Plasmas is still an issue despite what people may claim. People on there are still returning them with "screen burn".

I spent ages looking int this and went down the Samsung 40" LCD HD ready route. Just seemed to offer a better picture than many of the plasmas and importantly for me used a third of the energy of the plamsa screens.

Not sure the energy issue is still as bad as suggested above - off to do some research
p.s. - also bought at the same time a 26" Samsung LCD as a 2nd TV - again, price and picture quality value were the drivers. It's a good picture but not a patch on the plasma. If you're going LCD you'll need to go full 1080 to get a quality to match the new plasmas.

Test done by AVt.o.p. messtechnic in Germany, they tested a panasonic 42px60 plasma, LG 42LC2R LCD, Philips 42PF7621D LCD, Sony 40s200 LCD and a Samsung LE40R71B LCD. They measured the total energy consumed watching movies from DVD
Result watching 6 days, 7 nights (German version) (This is a movie that is quiet bright)
1. LG 42" LCD 200.10 Wh
2. Sony 40" LCD 208.60 Wh
3. Philips 42" LCD 218.90 Wh
4. Panasonic 42" Plasma 230.40 Wh
5. Samsung 40" LCD 239.20 Wh
Result watching X-Men (A rather dark movie)
1. Panasonic 42" Plasma 200.80 Wh
2. LG 42" LCD 205.70 Wh
3. Sony 40" LCD 213.80 Wh
4. Philips 42" LCD 224.60 Wh
5. Samsung 40" LCD 246.70 Wh
The Sony and Samsung were 2" smaller then the rest of the screens but they could not take advantage of this fact. (The Samsung actually preformed the worse in both movies)

screen burn only happens when the unit has a still pic left on the screen for over 2 hours, so not really anything to worry about, did you also know lcd tvs front and read projetors and flat lcd tv can suffer from screen brun?

Yeah Plasma for me too.
Had mine for over 2 years now and its going great. Left Sky Sports on over night when falling asleep once woke up and no screen burn what so ever. Just dont buy any cheap rubbish and you should be fine with either tbh.
You get what you pay for when it comes to technology.

Just bought a Sony 32S2530 in the comet on line sale. £599 which I didn't think was too bad.
To be delivered Tuesday
Not the 32V2500, but the differences don't add up to the £250 difference !

LCD gets my vote, but depends on the size you want as i was under the impression that you could only get LCD upto 42" then if you wanted bigger you could only get Plasma !?

I don't own either, so I have no particular axe to grind here, but from what I have seen, LCD and Plasma are both suitable up to a certain size, then Plasma simply pulls away in terms of image quality.
That's simply what my eyes see, disregarding any techy facts etc. and that is what is important (to me anyway) at the end of the day.
Geezer

As they both have strong points, this topic will go on forever, which will result in me reading yet another one of these threads but still not come to a decision...your thoughts on renting?

If you are looking for a good LCD at a fantastic price, i would recommend a Samsung LE40R74BDX. My mate has just got one are the picture is brilliant! It doesn't do full 1080p HD but 768 is good enuff for me.....especially when its 40" for £700! Ordered mine today!

The quality of a Plasma pucture is always better due to the much bigger colours availability thereby making for a more natural picture, and better contrast. The lcd's are getting faster as far as refresh time is concerned but a plasma will give as good a moving picture as a CRT.
