Question Mobile phones for people with vision impairment??

My mum is slowly going blind and has started to struggle when using her mobile phone, mainly when reading or writing text messages, or navigating menus. I want to buy her a phone with a big, bright screen and the option to display larger than normal text. Also being able to change the colour sheme (eg. black text on white background) and adjust contrast would really help her. Larger keys would help too.

Does anyone know of any current mobile phones that would be easier for her to use? Any help would really be appreciated as I have drawn a blank so far with my online research.

Try RNIB but just a thought, what about using the voice tag function on most phones?

Thanks mate, yes have looked at RNIB site but it's hard to find model-specific up-to-date info, especially regarding extra large text and menus.

Voice-tags definitely will help when dialling, but not when texting/reading texts.

Can't help really, just thought I'd mention I have seen blind passengers on my trains using what appear to be normal looking phones but they read everything out to the user, so if you go through phonebook it says the name and number as you scroll through, must do the same for texts etc. I am guessing the phone companies must offer some sort of a software update for said functions. As mentioned you are best off speaking to RNIB or go into somewhere like the carphone warehouse and see if they can offer advice.

Naz.

Thanks guys for the suggestions, I appreciate it

Because my mum still has a fair amount of usable vision I wanted to get her a 'normal' mobile phone but one that can show a larger typeface and menus.

It is a very delicate issue but until she cannot use visual devices at all we are trying to keep her positive by not treating her as if she is blind already, so a phone that reads out aloud to her would be a step too far at the moment.

Her condition (AMD) is worsening but at a very slow rate.

With most smartphones you can change the font size and colours. I can on my P990i and the screen is excellent. The phone is likely to be OTT for her use though.
