My Pioneer CD Recorder has gone **** up, I went into a shop to ask about buying another and the guy asked me WHY? So I said because it's the way I like to do things, you won't get one he said It's only 6 years old and apprantly you can't even get the parts to repair them.

I still use my Pioneer CLD925 Laser Disc player.
Cost me £1000 many years ago.
I built up a large collection in the days before DVD, some disc were approaching £50 to buy before DVD killed the format off.
Here's a pic for those with short memories.

If you can bear to part with it, the Thorens (presuming its a 125) is worth a couple of hundred quid on fleabay
Still using a B&O BeoVision LX2502, which probably dates from the late 80's early 90's, still an amazingly good looking peice of kit, more like furniture than consumer electronics

Still have my Sony Trintron 14" portable TV which is in the bedroom, had that for 18 years now and still an excellent picture. Same goes for my JVC stereo although no longer in use since I got with the Mrs and her stereo is much better/modern. Again until recently had my VCR that was bought for me on my 21st so that lasted 12 years before failing, could probably be repaired but not bothered as it would be cheaper to buy a new one and I don't record to tape any more.

lol looks like my dads setup. To think you needed all that crap just to play music. Looked cool as **** back in the day though. Are each of those boxes quite heavy?
My old mans got a 35 year old electric lawn mower, and still has some wharfedale speakers that are old as **** too.
I still have the original game boy

The problem with laserdisc is they are not anamorphic so you have to zoom in to see the widescreen presentation meaning you may be zooming in to about 350 lines of resolution. It was still a great picture on the 28” and 32” CRT sets of the time, a 32” set was a monster back then certainly far better than VHS.
As DVD technology gathered pace the picture quality soon outshone laserdisc, an Asda cheapo would probably get as good a picture as my £1000 laser disc player.
What hasn’t improved is the sound, the DTS and DD mixes on the later laser discs are not as highly compressed as most DVD’s and the sound is more open, even my £500 Denon DVD player doesn’t out perform the Pioneer on sound quality.
The major step forward is the price, a good laser disc player with DTS and DD used to cost around £1000 with discs costing upto £50 and that's many years ago.
I wonder how many people would be into home cinema today if DVD's were a similar price?

Sometimes newer isn't better IMO:
I have a 1978 Sony HMK70 integrated Hi-Fi system running off the audio from my PC (another relic - PIII 1gig with voodoo banshee gfx ). Although it has been modded, with beefed up power transistors and accompanying DC rectifyer components, so the power supply can handle it. Yet to find an equivelent modern Midi system that sounds as good as this with the matching power output, without resorting to audiovile separates. SuperHET radio receiver can also root out all the local pirate radio stations with ease.
I also have a 30 year old Philips TV in the spare room, fully functioning with "ultrasonic" remote control (predates infra red ). It's amazing how wide it is compared to the FST tubes that superceeded it...funny how it went full circle back to widescreen
Also a 1990 Technics full separates system including a hugely powerful SUX-90 amp (modified to be 2ohm stable) and fully automated turntable (works like a cd player ).
Finally I have a G.E.C stereo Radiogram with a BSR record player (keep it local ). Valve amplifier and built in 6x9 speakers. Picks up all sorts on the radio from over the English channel...even with FM!! Although I belive its blown a valve in the power amp on the one channel

Still using my Cyrus II with PSX amp, alongside a Cyrus DAD7 CD player. The amp is 17yo and CD 15yo. I also still use my 17yo Mission 764i speakers as my main speakers in a 7.1 surround set-up. Over the years I've compared all these to newer replacements of equal and higher value and never found anything that makes me want to replace.
A mate who bought my 15yo Linn Basik from me many years ago has just resigned it due to a motor failure. He has utilised the arm and cart on his new deck though.
My old 15yo Finlux TV is still running in my nephews bedroom, even though its tuner went ages ago (fed via scart from VHS & DVD).
My Mac is ancient in computer circles, being a 400mhz G3 PB. Still running perfectly, but struggling with some new processor hungry apps and hi-res video now. Will be upgrading this soon.
