AMSTRAD HUNTS SPECTRUM GAMES FOR SECRET PROJECT
#1
Hardware manufacturer Amstrad is after games from way back in days of yore for a secret project slated for 2002
17:28 Amstrad is currently looking for the owners of copyrights of ZX Spectrum titles for an as yet unspecified project in 2002. As the older members of the audience will be well aware, Clive Sinclair's magic box was the kick-start for the cottage games industry in the UK, providing affordable home computing for the masses. Rare, then Ultimate Play the Game, cut its teeth on Spectrum games such as Knight Lore, Atic Atac and Sabre Wulf. End of story.
Quite what Amstrad is up to is something of a mystery at the moment. Ads are due to run in the British trade press tomorrow, but insiders have today confirmed that a full announcement on the project is to be made in the New Year.
Rumour arose this morning that Amstrad was looking for Spectrum licenses to serve to its TV set-top boxes, but sources close to the company have today admitted that this has nothing to do with cable TV hardware.

I own the rights to the following spectrum games
Sabre Wulf
Jet Set *****
Knight lore
Matchday
Elite
Atic Atak
Jetpack
Tetris
Uridium
Lords of Midnight
Valhalla
The Hobbit
Daley Thompsons Decathalon
Skool Daze
Spy Hunter
Ant Attack
I'll sell for 100 million quid
Better download em from the net soon, if Amstrad buys the rights no more speccy emulators.

Wierd, I would have put money on this being for STBs like someone did with NES games a few years back. Wonder why they aren't after C64 games or just using <snigger> CPC games?

I have a fair few of the Ultimate games in snapshot format if anyone would like to take a look at the list only, of course I would never condone having copies of these games but since I did actually own all the originals they are in fact 'backup copies' for personal use Ahh, to be 11 years old and waiting for the next ultimate release again ...

The only thing I can think of is mobile phones.
Mobiles can emulate the Spectrum's graphics and sound pretty easily I would think. What was it, a Z80 ?

Ultimate (Rare/ACG) is one of the companies that definitely doesn't like to see its games being touted around as snapshots, so it will be interesting to see whether they appear.
Judging by the pslewis/Moray thread on backing up DVDs, I doubt that "backing them up for personal use" would stand up in court.

It'd be excellent to be taken to court just for playing Knite Lore. You're right about Rare, they managed to get all their Spectrum games off of most of the Sinclair archives and one is hard pushed to find them nowadays.

This is for mobile phones - story seems to have appeared today.
Still, I'd rather run a speccy emulator on one of the new phones that is basically an iPaq with a built-in phone.
