Default What to do in Bruges???

Just booked a mini holiday with 24 hours in Bruges, Belgium. Any suggestions what to see/do/avoid there?

See the town, take a boat ride, drink beer. Get a guided tour of the brewery. Buy choccy. Wear comfortable shoes, they like cobbles. Avoid Rodenback unless you know what it is. It's supposed to be like that it's not "off". Similarly, anything labelled Gueze or with an Oud in front of it.

Avoid Stella, Jupiler etc. Try to get a bottle of Westvleteren 12 in the Hotel Erasmus bar if you're not averse to darker, heavier beers. Erasmus can be touchy about non-guests depending on how busy they are.

I liked the view from the top of the clock tower - 300 steps or so to the top

I'd second the clock tower. Look out for the horse and carts too - they take no prisoners

Yes, you must do the clock tower and the brewery and time permitting, the canal ride. As Belgium goes, Bruges is a lovely place.

I was at the top when the bells rang! Get your timing right to be there when that happens!

Don't eat and drink in the market square, it cost me 12 euros for a medium beer and a hot chocolate, if you venture a bit further out the food is better and cheaper, my wife and I found a little place called the Hobbit grill which seemed really popular with the locals and directly opposite was Tolkiens which is run by the same people. Do the Clock Tower, amazing views from the top.
Keep an eye on the goings on here http://www.meteowvl.be/flash/brugge.php. Enjoy yourself and don't try and do all the beers in one night. The Kwaak is good if only for the glass it comes in.

Horse and cart were extremely popular when we went. The queue stretched right around the square!!

Great place to visit if, like me, you are into chocolate...
