So the people trying to take over are more hard-liners? I guess they're pissed off with/opposed to Thailands image as being a drug taking/prostitution ridden/lady boy banging/party capital type place and want to restore a more traditional type of image and rid the countrty of such things?

So far it seems peaceful and relatively calm, which hopefully will continue, as I have a friend living there with a family, two sets of friends holidaying there, and another couple on their way from China next week.
The reason for the coup is the last election in April was invalid, therefore the PM was in theory there as a dictator, and by all accounts had been doing quite a poor job, to say the least, and as stated previously, had made billions and had been accused of corruption. I'm not sure the global image of Thailand alone was reason enough for a coup. I can't see the ousted PM Thaksin returning to Thailand as he has been accused of insulting the King which carries a minimum 3 year sentence.
It is obviously not a good thing, and martial law has now been imposed, but hopefully it will remain peaceful and the military will only be in power very briefly.
