Are there any places to do this anymore? I used to use Lycos, FreeServe and IRC. It's been years since I've done this (and met a whole load of psychopathic women but that's another story!).

I chat quite often to friends, though as I have a mac, I use ichat
and that covers AIM (the AOL talky thing you mentioned
