80mph in a 60mph what should i do???
Couple of days ago I was coming back through gloucestershire at about 10pm after droping a delivery off in cardiff, and a police car with lights on pulled up beside me and cut in front, I had to pull off the dual carriageway and follow him off the road. He got out the car with his ticket pad asked for my name and address etc said that he had me on film doing 80mph (should of been 60mph because driving a van) said I'm sure i wasn't going that fast. He said it was downhill and many people were caught out on that piece of road.
He then said you look like a hard working guy and you have had a long day, correct? I agreed and he said I will let you off because the road was empty and it was downhill, but try to keep the speed under control in the future!
Said I couldn't believe it, i thought coppers like him didn't exist anymore, he said the speed cameras were just about making money and were not as effective as him pulling someone over!
Shook his hand and off I went
So to all the do gooders who thought this was a thread about getting points and a fine and the normal comments like "do the crime and do the time"

Actually there are plenty police around that let people off all the time.......rapists, murderers, car thieves etc.
Still very lucky though, speeding is considered almost as bad as a pensioner forgetting to give the council a few quid to empty the bins. Normally society demands imprisonment for such henous crimes

80 in a 60 is an utter disgrace and you should have been done good and proper!! In a van too - bet you tailgate legal drivers!
I shall write to the Police area involved and report the matter and demand that something be done about it!!!
Which Police Force was it and did you see his number? I need the date and time and the Reg Number of your van - thank you

PSL - I know it's tongue in cheek. I would commend the Rozzer on his decision. Come on, the chap wasn't doing any harm FFS. Sometimes you have to use discretion. If you were a Tragic Cop would you book a white van man at the end of your shift for doing 10 mph over the limit?
I doubt it.

Pete, should policing (automated or otherwise) be about punishing the offender or about educating them to not do it again? What happened above is about the latter, your way is about he former.
Put it this way, you can tell a child that something is wrong and punish them but they'll never understand until you educate them into why they are doing something wrong.

As I said, traffic coppers were always more effective and they used to catch the really bad nutters. Speedcams are useless in that respect as well as being inherently inaccurate anyway.
I bet your respect for that copper will make you a better driver too.
