Transmission whine at 80 mph

On driving home on the motorway last night I noticed a whining sound whilst travelling at 80mph.
Obviously worried, I started to ascertain the problem.
The whine starts at 75mph very quietly and then increases in volume up to 80mph (all in 5th gear). If the speed increases to 81mph or over the noise disappears completely.
If the speed is >80mph and the car is allowed to slowly reduce in speed to the 75-80mph "whine zone" there is no noise.
I have tried the car @ 80mph in 4th gear with no noise at all.
The car is a brand new (2600 mile) STi 5 Type R coupe.
If anyone has any useful suggestions please help me, it's doin-me-ead-in!!!! I don't want my transmission suddenly falling out the bottom of my car @ 80mph

Type R gearing in 4th gear at 80MPH with NO noise, there IS something wrong there! 
I don't suppose the whine that starts at 75mph is accompanied by an intermittent blue tint on the rear view mirror?
Seriously, some cars do make strange noises at cartain speeds, some sort of harminic I think, but I don't know if the gear is involved in this.

My MY97 does exactly the same thing, but I think it has something to do with the new Group N Discs I put on.
Im not too sure tho, but it starts at exactly the same speed you say. I gonna try 4th tonight and see what happens.
