Default car tax

odd question i know, but you guys have been great so far so thought i'd ask your advice again. bf can't get car taxed, he accidently sent the green but he needed to the dvla and now they are saying that he has got to fill in a v62 form and it will cost him £19 and up to 4 weeks to get sorted. thing is though, he needs to use the car, but is concerned that he will get into all sorts of trouble if he does. is he correct?

Failing to display your tax disc if you've actually got one is an offence - so yes - he could get in trouble.

Best advice I can give is for your bf to to register as a foreign national, claim asylum, rape / murder someone - He should be fine then.

As he's a law abiding citizen - he's fcuked .

Knowing the current Criminal justice system I'd say he was looking at a 2-3 year stretch .

Fine & points probably - that's the standard tax for car law breakers.

There must be a quicker way of getting the tax disc - but probably involves a trip to swansea / local car tax office - maybe someone else will know .

.
"The new rules mean that keepers who fail to re-license their vehicle (or declare SORN) will incur an automatic penalty of £80 (reduced to £40 if paid within 28 days). Those who ignore the penalty could receive a County Court Judgement against them, could be stopped by the police, and/or have their vehicles clamped. Determined offenders will be faced with prosecution and could be fined a minimum £1000.
DVLA carries out a computer check each month to identify those vehicles without a valid tax disc. Although the new rules mean that it is no longer necessary for the vehicle to be seen on a public road before a penalty is issued current on-road enforcement will continue."

but he can't relicense the vehicle because he sent the registration document to the dvla when he bought car at the beginning of april. he wasn't even meant to do that, the dealer who he bought the car off should have done tht and bf just should have kept green section and usedthat to get tax with. cause he didn't know this and sent the whole lot to the dvla he is now screwed through other peoples faults, ie dodgy dealer once again.

If you read the instuctions on the log book, you know, where he signed it to say he was the new keeper. It says in capital letters....TO BE RETAINED BY THE NEW KEEPER..
It always pays to read a document you a signing..He cant do anything until cheque clears and he gets the nod to tax it from the DVLA..

Ignorance is no defence in this case...dyslexia maybe...

chap isn't very good at reading no and knowing him he probably didn't bother to read anything before he signed anything, no matter how much he tells me he did, i don't beleive him.
so what should he do then, borrow my broomstick, couldn't he go to swansea and get them to get their ***** into gear and get it sorted like now???

I've actually got a V5 sat on my desk right now, and to be precise at the top of the green slip (V5C/2) is it says:-

'New Keeper Supplement - To be retained by the new keeper. DO NOT send to DVLA (see note overleaf)'

Without the green slip or the full V5 or a V11 renewal form, he's going to have to sit tight, and remember this as one of life's lessons........There is no other way to tax the car.

Had exactly the same trouble yesterday car had ran out of tax and could not find the log book for ****. After an hour of ringing the dvla hot line, finally got through only to end up speaking to a talking cabbage . I ended up going to the local dvla office and filling out a v62 form (costs £19) and a v10 form. Apparently without the reminder or log book this is the only way of taxing your car now.
