Anyone employed a school leaver?
Apart from a few office juniors I see round the town, most ex school kids round here go directly to motherhood.
Has anyone actually employed any of the kids that seem to to be so angelic whilst at school? Are they a bit less brave? Do they get through interviews?
Or are they all at University? I just don't see youngsters at work nowadays

I have just taken on a 16 year old girl who is free for the first year on a training scheme. She is picking things up quite quickly and seems keen. It's the first time I have taken one on, think I may have got lucky.

I work with young people. Some are pains, but there are genuinely alot who just need boundaries and guidance to become good employees.
It is so hard for them to get into work these days due to the amount of good, cheap labour being imported into this country.
Give them a chance.

Fair point Clare, but i think a lot of youngsters get a rude awakening after letting mummy's apron strings go. They are genuinely taken aback by the real world and I think are ill prepared (through no fault of their own) to deal with it.

i think the problem with young people is most of them come out of school and such without a clue about anything, no commitments, parents will put them up for next to nowt, they don't need a lot of cash, and they have no real drive.
expect them ringing in sick, and generally being workshy layabouts until they have a few years under there belt IMO

We have a few youngsters (under 18) at our place in the offices, start off as juniors and can work their way up, although not many make it, either get bored, have no common sense or are using it as a stop gap before uni or saving for travelling but we been lucky lately and seem to have a few decent ones that you can even have a conversation with.
And the visual distraction is quite nice as well
