As Napster has been down for ages, can anyone recommend any other sites?

I think Grokster uses the Kazaa network, and it looks like the client does distributed downloads (i.e. downloading multiple chunks from other users simulatenuosly).

Audiogalaxy is good for music too, but Grokster has vids too (if you have a fast connexion it's poss. to download a movie).

http://www.winmx.com . Similar to napster and does the job nicely.

If memory serves correctly though, I am not sure if we are supposed to discuss this too much on here. Does seem to be a bit of a taboo subject IIRC and there a few people that took offence to these discussions. Could get some flames coming your way......

Don't have a problem with any of this myself, as it is already so commenplace......

Cheers,

Nick.

Indeed. But I actually found Grokster after reading a news article about post-Napster P2P networks on the BBC News website.

Nick,

Only problems were discussions on breaking copyright, getting around licences, and other generally illegal activities.

Cheers

As I said in another post in General about a 450bhp scoob, Kazaa is spyware and snoops on you without you knowing, be careful if you install it - you'll at least want a personal firewall to stop it from doing naughty things. You can see what software is known to be spyware by checking out:

http://www.infoforce.qc.ca/spyware/enknownlistfrm.html

Cheers
Neil.

Cool

Kazaa isn't spyware. It contains some spyware, some of which you are invited to switch off if not interested.

I knew that before I used it. But forgot to mention it above.

British obsession with secrecy over mundane tosh never ceases to amaze.

Grokster? What does it bring to the party that Kazaa doesn't on it's own then. Same network, same difference?

Carl, I wasn't being critical, I just wondered what it did differently? Extra ***** etc. Or is that just the video section?

Might be worth visiting www.musiccity.com - the Morpheus software is great. Seems to be linked to the Kazaa netwrok as well, but no spy/adware present.
Works a treat, seems to be plenty to choose from.

Limewire is another one (www.limewire.com).

It's actually a general file sharing program, but people just happen to use it quite a lot for mp3s and video files. ;-) All the files are on the machines of other people running the client.
