reading a tachymetre...
ive just bought a new aviator watch with a tachymetre and i was just wondering how to read all the numbers around the edge...what purpose do they serve...? im led to believe theyre a way of calculating speed...?
purely out of curiosity before the 'know it all/holier than thou' brigade start banging on about buying a watch i dont know how to use...
cheers, bri...

Tachymeter will show how fast you've travelled over a unit of distance.
Eg. Say you cover a mile in 45 seconds.
Read off the tachymeter at the 45 second mark on your watch (ie; the 9 o'clock position). This should read 80 - ie; 80mph.
