DTS is higher quality (less compressed).

Phil,

No idea of the ins and outs of the two systems, some AV geek will be able to tell you that.

But DTS always sounds better on my system that plain old DD. So i always use that if the DVD has it.

Cheers

This has been discussed many times on the AV forums.

I always prefer DTS, although DD-EX is catching it up on quality. I try and seek out as many titles as I can with DTS from wherever in the world gets it. As long as your DVD player is multi-region that is.

Use THIS to find the best versions, and THIS to find the best price. The geeks over on AV Forums are handy for lots of info too

I only got my Denon 2805 AV reciever a week ago so still learning the miriad of functions it has but I'd say

For DVD's
DTS Cinema when supported
Dolby Pro logic II Cinema when not.

For music
Turn on Pure direct (switches off unnecessary circuits)
and Stereo (thus using only the front two / main speakers.

One thing I haven't worked out yet is which is the best Video source
Component
Composite
S-video
Scart
Optical
Digital coaxial

My Yamaha amp auto-switches to the right one when you put a DVD in.... And Denon are top notch so i assume it does the same??
Its normally either Dolby Digital or DTS... Should just leave the amp in 'Normal' mode and let it sort itself out...

Component is definitely the best for video. Assuming your TV supports it too.
And digital co-axial is considered to be slightly better than optical. With the right cables of course!

Component for video, unless you have HDMI/DVX, or prog scan.
Digital coax for sound, why bother with optical Just adds more process's to getting the sound through so more chance for degredation.

DTS when supported (esp 6.1/ES Matrix/ES Discrete)
DD otherwise (esp EX)
Haven't got DPL II so not sure of its uses, but maybe just Dolby version of DTS Neo6 which is good for stereo surround (NICAM or Dolby Surround 2.0). I use DTS Neo6 Cinema for the VHS and TV sound, DTS Neo6 Music for SACD multi-channel.

Hall/Cinema/Concert will be surround effects for stereo music listening to try and make things fun/interesting, but apart from Yamaha amps I've always found these effects to be complete $h!te. It's the one reason I'd love to change my Pioneer 7.1 amp for another Yam as I used to love my old ProLogic Enhanced DSP-A2070 on Blues Club, Jazz Bar, Church etc.

MY tv IS THE SAMSUNG LCD LW32A33W
the Denon is the DHT-500SD

from TV to Denon.. as i use all the TV sound going through the Denon.. hence sound always turn OFF on the TV, i use Component Leads out the comonat 'IN' on the TV and they go into the 'OUT' on the Denon (the Red/Yellow/Green inputs. thats just for the PICTURE!!!

Sound comes from Scart EXT 2 (AV) socket on the Tv... As there are no sound AV sockets on the Tv other than using the Scart socket.
BUT this links Via the FREEVIEW box.... so the TV Ext 2/AV Scart goes to the FREEVIEW BOX in to 1 of the Scart sockets.. then the second scart on the FreeView goes with a Scaet fitting then splits into AV leads to plug into the sound on the Denon (video2 In).
the Aerial goes from the wall to the FreeView then from the FreeView to the TV.

does that all sound ok to ppl?

My Yamaha 'sorts its self' out too - however, if the title has both Dolby and DTS, it see's the Dolby first and doesnt tend to look any further, so with DTS titles i have to manually switch the amp to DTS.

I have that system. DTS is far better! Set the mode you want via the DVD menu (eg DTS or DD) and the Denon will automatically switch to whichever.

Scrolling through those sound options are for normal telly or listening to music etc with Dolby Pro-Logic (DTS Neo is equiv to DP-L). I find Neo gives a richer sound over DP-L...........
