Default Hair styling products - some advice please

I have waist length wavy hair, which I normally wear up, or in a plait. Trouble is, it normally starts unravelling, with wispy bits coming out of the plait, so that by lunchtime I look like I've been dragged through a hedge backwards. I keep thinking I need to smarten up a bit, and was wondering what styling product might help keep my hair stuck in place throughout the day. But when I go into Boots or Superdrug, I'm bewildered by the choice of products available (gel, mousse, spray, wax, putty etc) and haven't a clue what might work. Ideally I'd like something that doesn't leave my hair looking or feeling greasy or sticky or crunchy, as I don't wash my hair every day. Grateful for any suggestions.

My daughters hair is waist lenght, and is plaited every day by my wife. It stays in. My daughter is 6. If a 6 year olds hair can stay in for 12 hours, can i suggest your plaits need a bit of work?
As for haircare products, no idea!

I have a 6-year old too like FlightMan and her hair stays in if I do 2 plaits, but a single one with only a bobble at the bottom, looks messy by the end of the day. To stop this, I do a pony tail first, then plait the hair and then put a bobble at the bottom.

I think that maybe your hair needs a good cut too. If hair is not cut often enough, it tends to go thin at the bottom creating a triangle effect - am I explaining this right? It will also break easily leaving shorter bits which may be causing the mess.

Failing that, I used a straightening gelee which smooths the hair shaft. I do blow dry and straighten my hair, which also could keep it looking smooth.

How girlie is this???

Well, without being horrible, on all those make over programmes, they always give people with long hair a jolly good cut! It makes hair thicker to have a good layered cut and is easier to care for.

I kept trying to grow my hair long, but gave up and keep it shoulder length now. It's so much easier.

My sister has long hair and wears hers in a pony tail but she has found that her hair is breaking where she has the band.
I would iamgine your hair may have become brittle from being worn up all the time.

You could use some mouse or spray to hold it in place I suppose.
And try a long hair shampoo and a good contitioner to help strengthen.
I like John Freida or Andrew Collinge.

Have a make over... go for a shorter style.
Why not go for a length that you can wear down for a change but still long enough for a pony tail if you need to?

The headteacher at the school where I teach decided to grow her hair long.
She wore it up most of the time.

She retired this year and had it cut short and modern.
I swear she looks at least 10 years younger.

Go for it....have it cut

Mrs c, the wife said start with either ghd or asap hair straightners, a ghd hair protector and get it cut to at least your shoulders as the roots cannot nourish hair that long and it will get to the stage where you will have to have it all lopped off, and thats from the gaffer. The high street products are garbage go to a quality salon and buy your products there, they will also be able to advise you as well.
