Question M62, in the pennines........does anyone know.....

..........the story behind WHY it splits into two seperate carriageways to avoid a farm, high up near the summit.

I really can't see that they'd have done this willingly, it must have cost a lot more than a standard dual carriageway setup.

Dunno the reasons behind it but I remember that house being on the telly about a year or 2 ago... something about they built the road and he doesnt have permission to do some sort of joining road to get onto the motorway easily. Cant remember exactly what went on but was quite an interesting story at the time.... Wasnt paying too much attention though, it was on 1 of the misses house renovating programs IIRC.

Ah.........thanks. I can't imagine what lengths the guy must have had to go to in the 70's to beat the planners/builders.

Go pass it often, brings a smile to my face every time I pass there. There is supposdly an access road to the farm under the motorway ! Bought some furniture from an auction that came from his house !

It is nicknamed "The Little House on the Prairie" and is referred to by that name in traffic flashes on the radio.

i think the farmer's union backed the fact he wanted to stay put and that was that ! it breaks up the monotony of that piece of motorway anyway as you go past and say " look at that silly **** "
