Little nutter, hope hes okay!
Under recent employment law legislation, you and your wife are entitled to time off for a dependant. Under the circumstance you will fall into this category.
This time however is unpaid, so it's up to you to talk to your employer and explain the circumstances and if their kind hearted, may allow you to take time off classed as a Holiday. This however depends on how much of your holiday entitlement you have already taken.
The next piece of legislation may be of more use:
Flexible Working:
You need to meet the folling criteria:
Have been working at leat 26 weeks in continuous employment with the employer, when you make an application.
Must be a relative of a child under 6 years of age. (fine)
The application must be made no later than two weeks before the child hits the age of 6 (?)
must not be an agency worker or in the armed forces.
You can ask for the following:
Changes to your hours of work.
Changes to you times of work
Or change the plce of work between your employer and home.
This entitlement will also be available to your wife or girlfriend. you could then work around the little un.
As for childcare costs..............pass!
Hope this helps.

I tried that once, but only got a broken ankle
I suppose from his point of view its a good thing it happened at the end of the holidays because now he gets to miss school.
Hope he heals up soon.

If they do sack her you can then take them to an employment tribunal and seek compensation and get her job back if she wants it.
Which route were you thinking of taking?
