There's a guy local to me who's a regular on Pistonheads who got 3 months inside for doing 130mph on a deserted A414. Seems somewhat unfair in comparison.

Things like that (and other things, notably the 11 year old boy found dead in livingston, ten minutes from my house) almost make me scared to bring kids into this world

Is it the law at fault or the magistrate's application of the law. I think it's the latter in this case. AFAIK the maximum penalty for dangerous driving (to which the offender has admitted) is **14 years** in prison.

http://www.homeoffice.gov.uk/n_story.asp?item_id=834

Hope the prosecution has a right of appeal and the magistrate gets a good kicking for being a total idiot. It would even be obvious to a small child that the punishment doesn't fit the crime in this case.

Suresh - i recon you are right. Bad or improper interptitation of the law. It sends out the wrong message to the scum really.

I think 10+ years would be right for what he has done to the poor lad.

Some much stiffer senntances are whats needed all across the board.

Sorry, I read that wrong. The 14 years is for causing death by dangerous driving. I think dangerous driving alone is max 2 years imprisonment.
Hopefully someone who knows the law will correct me if that's wrong too!.

To be fair I think the sentance is about right. Why destroy two lives, I am sure the guilt is bad enough.

How many times have most people been driving and made a mistake, but fortunately there wasn't something in the way.

Two years for ruining a childs legs does not seem to be the right punishment IMHO - just saddens me that the law in the UK does not have the bite or the ***** to punish wrong doers fvor their crimes.

I am sorry but that is wrong it wasn't a crime running over his legs it was an accident.

The actual crime was driving dangerously which in so many cases does not have such a bad outcome.

We went through this before. Gary Hart got 5 years for falling asleep at the wheel. As a result, 11 people died. But his crime was only falling asleep at the wheel (so driving dangerously). Many people do this, there's no consequence and no prosecution. So it appears that the outcome does affect the punishment.

Still it is wrong IMHO
It still sets a bad excample
The child had his legs amputated because of the other lads actions, no fault of his own.
Some poeple have to realise that actions have concequences and the punishment should be befitting of the consequences which i do not feel they are in this case, its not like he broke the kids are and he will be playinf footie in six weeks.

Yes but how many times have you made a mistake which could have turned out so much worse.

What is a big enough punishment 6months 10 years at the end of the day the guy is still going to have to rebuild his life aswell.
