I think a user with the nick PG is a firefighter but I might be wrong. He certainly got upset that PSLewis accused all firefighters of being overpaid, workshy whiners.
As much as I can help with your question; a mate of mine with glasses applied and went through some of the training. He didn't get in but that was due to a dodgy knee so he said.

Dunno for sure.
AFAIK for wholetime operational firefighters in our brigade, you need excellent eyesight to join but if you need to wear glasses after that then it is ok. Basically, entry requirements are changing and being challenged all the time now as an equal opportunities employer. Put it this way, I know and work with capable firefighters who are dyslectic, colour blind, hearing impaired, diabetic and even stupid
So ask, and if they say no, then challenge them why you can't.

Hi Tom
There certainly are frefighters in Cambridgeshire that wear glasses. A lad on our station wears glasses. The brigade either issued him with some, or helped to pay for his set that he wears for firefighting. The only trouble might come when you need to wear BA (breathing apparatus) but then BA is usually worn in dark smokey conditions anyway where you can't see!!!!
How bad is your eye sight? Can you see anything without your glasses?
As Daz said, ask your local brigade/fire station. They are the only ones with the answers.
Oh, and Good Luck, I've been retained for 6 years now, and wuoldn't give it up for the world. There are tough times, but the good times out-weigh the bad.
Any questions or advice, pm me or ask on a thread.

Hi.
I was retained (6 years) prior to going wholetime as a Firefighter.
Speaking only for my Brigade the requirements for part-time are not as high than for wholetime.
FWIW I wear glasses now.
I have recently gone back to working the retained duty system on my rota days and I must admit that the job has changed A LOT !
The expectations they have of you now are very tying. I hope your employer is understanding.
The contract for part-time firefighters is about to change dramatically. There will be a requierment for them to provide 120 hours of cover allowing for 2 clear days( where as before if you could make it, fine. If not, hopefully there would be others avalible.)
There is also another Brigade down south somewhere that are trialing a new method where they are paid for 102 hours of "on call time" and not paid per turn out.
The money is handy and if it is a busy station then you may do well out of it but I know there are many people at my local station that are self employed and take a fair hit per hour during the day when they are out on a call.
As Daz says, things are changing almost on a daily basis to the extent that if you are a black, female, quadriplegic, muslim then they will probably give you a job straight away and install "suck and blow steering" on the wagons for you.
Any other questions just ask.

I've got a friend who was turned down by the Fire Brigade as when he had the compulsory eye test, he was told he needed glasses as he was slightly short sighted, but unfortunately for him it was enough for the Fire Brigade not to take him.
