In my sleep, I grind my teeth...
I'm falling apart!
One of my molars broken a couple of years ago, where a quarter of the enamal broke off, leaving most of the tooth and the filling.
It was repaired using a filling, and it has broken off a couple of times again since, each time they repaired it with a filling.
It happened again last night, and I'm getting sick of it!
Apparently this happens because I grind my teeth in my sleep. Is there any thing I can or use to stop more damage happening to my teeth?
I'm guessing that the repairs (£30 or thereabouts) is much cheaper than the alternatives of fixing it.

1) Gumshield as previously mentioned
2) Hypnotherapy...works well, but a bit more expensive than a gumshield

Hello
I think electro-shock therapy is the only way, but if that's too extreme have a read: http://www.ehow.com/how_1949_stop-grinding-teeth.html

Its called a Bite Raising Appliance or BRA. It is normally of a rubbery like material so that you chew into it instead of your own teeth. It also reprogrammes your jaws not to clamp down so hard. Grinding or Bruxism can come and go usually with stress. Its a way that stress is sometimes manifested. Go to your dentist and see what they can do.

If it's any help, me too (tm)! Hasn't had any adverse effects on me yet (beyond my ex g/f elbowing me 'cos it kept her awake... and it's not why she's ex either ) Definately stress related in my case. Positive(?) effects: have developed a coulthard-esque jaw
Have actually woken myself up with it too. Now that's wierd!
Be interested to know how you get on.. suspect it may cause me dental problems in time...

Do you suffer from migraines?
Many migraine sufferers grind their teeth at night which supposedly leads them to having an attack in the following days.
It's possibly stress related - have you been able to draw any connection between you having a stressful day and you 'grinding' that night?
Good luck!

I don't suffer from headaches (only when they are sinus or illness related)
Although reading a few websites about teeth grinding, it can cause broken sleep patterns, tired neck and shoulders, sore jaw/cheeks, etc, which I have suffered from.
I didn't know I grind my teeth, my wife told me about a year or so ago! I guess to chip the tooth again, it's probably due to the build up the London to Brighton bike ride and finally broke a day later.
