Thumbs down Jack Straw - off message?

Almost spat my coffee out when I read this yesterday about the protest-crushing in Uzbekistan:

In an interview with the BBC's The World This Weekend yesterday, Mr Straw said: "The situation is very serious, there has been a clear abuse of human rights, a lack of democracy and a lack of openness."

Mr Straw also called on the Uzbekistan government to allow independent observers, such as the Red Cross, to visit Andijan.

But asked if Britain would support an opposition movement, he said: "It's for the people to decide on a change of regime, not outsiders."

Isn't it funny how your attitudes towards dictators change when you're allowed to use an airbase in their country?

Nah - its cos Uzbekistan tow the (American) line when deciding how much oil they should pump. They haven't got that much anyway - not enough to justify an invasion. The list shows the number of years worth of reserves estimated for each country. Strange how good old Uncle Sam came to the rescue of Kuwait at the drop of a hat, invaded Iraq at the first opportunity but don't give a fek what happens in Uzbekistan

Iraq 128.98
Kuwait 127.70
United Arab Emirates 114.81
Saudi Arabia 85.13
Iran 67.25
Azerbaijan 67.02
Venezuela 63.58
Qatar 55.57
Uzbekistan 13.77
USA 10.52

it was a hypocritical statement although if they decided to cause a regime change it would be for releveant reasons. you cant just let things like whats going on there carry on.
