Helicopter license
Iv'e been told it will cost approx £15000 to get a helicopter license, but do'es anyone know if you need to have a fixed wing license first, or what the cost's to keep your license valid are? I.E. how many hour's flying time you need to do each year, to maitain your license? And rough cost's of renting a modest helicopter plus fuel price's.

Try Oxford Aviation mate, they're very very good with this kind of thing, have courses and the like, http://www.oxfordaviation.net/, thinking of going there myself to do the commercial airline course, the facilities are top notch,

do a search on google there is an english site (sorry, can't remember which one) that runs helicopter license courses in florida for about half the price - including accommodation - worth a trawl to save 7-8k?

See here

Might do it myself if I lived near an airfield.

I'm only aware that you get a five hour dispensation on your PPL(H) if you have a PPL(A)

Its cheaper to train in the States and I believe you need a fixed wing licence first. Its a very expensive hobby, an ex-boyfriend of mine owns one. I could get you a better idea of running costs if you need them.

Further to my earlier post if you check out www.regalhelicopters.co.uk (sorry can't do the link bit!) they give a full breakdown of cost and for a ppl(H) you do not have to have ppl (a) according to them. They also do a mix between usa and england to reduce costs. When Mrs Noxid gets over the new STi I will be pursuading her to lie in the sun in florida whilst I disappear for 60 Hours!!!

I know this because i know 2 people who fly helecopters, one is in the Army Air Corps and the other is in the RAF (both had to pass their fixed wing pilot test first).

You don't need a fixed wing license at all.
Also while flying in Florida is cheaper, you will probably turn out to be a much better pilot over here because of the weather and air traffic density.

is one of the more reputable places

On a more serious not, a guy I used to work with did his PPL(A) here in the UK, then went to the US to do to both his PPL(H) and his commercial as back then, in the early 90's, it cost (including his travel & accomodation) roughly 2/3 of what it would have cost him here.
Oh, and good luck

Military pilots do indeed need to do fixed wing first. I learned to fly a hateful little turd of an aeroplane called a Chipmunk before moving to the Bulldog - also fixed wing but at least blessed with being a product of the seventies rather than the forties - and only then got to move onto real flying.
I don't believe the requirement is the same as a civilian. But I do know that to get to the same point, qualifications-wise as I was at when the Queen stopped paying me to fly would cost a ludicrous amount of money
And no, my 7000 plus hours count for approximately stuff-all.
Ah well. Never believed in going back to a past life anyway...

I wanted to join the RAF in my teens but didn't because I couldn't choose to fly helicopters as my chosen career path and didn't want to do fixed wing first (if i'd known then the RAF would eventually get Apaches I would have suffered it though!)
I need to win the lottery - mmm my own Apache

You definately don't need to do fixed wing first, my cousin (TAFF-RA on here) did it about a year ago in Fresno California with Mazzei Flying School.

It works out at £5k to £6k ish on the current exchange rate. You can get free accommodation there (and it's not bad) for the duration of your course if you share a flat with with another student.
I was tentatively pencilled in to do my fixed wing there this year but then my ******* work decided not to make me redundant.
The admissions adviser is Jerry Personius and he's a top bloke, give him a call and have a chat with him if you want more info. He used to fly F-4 Phantoms for the USAF and was based in the UK for a while.
Mazzei get plenty of Brits going over there for courses.
