buying a 2nd hand car privately - questions, how to pay?
hi folks
other than paying by cheque how else can one pay from a building society account? i don't want to pay by cheque as dont want to have to wait the 4-5 days for it to clear. taking 15k cash seems impossible/crazy.
bankers drafts - from nationwide building society?
transferring funds somehow?
if a car is in at 15k (clk merc) what price should i offer to try and haggle some off (i do think this is a fair price for this car, but obviously cheaper is better!)
any other tips appreciated!
cheers
steven

i ALWAYS buy via bank transfer....send the funds then go collect when cleared...can be done same day if you want....if you dont trust them enough to do that then dont buy their car.
cash is for yesterday!

the guy that bought our DC-5 transferred the money electronically to our bank account. It was there within 24 hours so I suppose he paid a fee for that. We then took the car, log book and documents up to him on the agreed date and after we'd received confirmation from the bank that it was definitely in our account.

prob paid about £10 for the instant transfer.
to add......if its on at £15k offer £13.5 but be prepared to walk....no point starting that if you have made all the noises to suggest you will buy at the asking price anyway.

Just do a transfer into his account....that way both parties know the monies gone through, and exchange keys/docs int he bank........leaving a mate with his mate outside.....just make sure your mate is a kickboxer in case things get out of hand....

The last few cars I've bought and sold privately have all been for cash. Banks and building societies can easily arrange this given a couple of days' notice.
Handing over that sort of money in used £20 notes is pretty painful, mind...

Hi m8
If you go on to AA website they have a standard form for buying and selling cars for private buyers. Like a contract. Just print them out and take them along. Keeps things simple but official.
Alas

Second the HPI check - you don't want to be buying a car from someone who doesn't own it !!

10% is fine....i had a BMW advertised at £23k and had LOTS of "serious" offers from 17-19k......in the ned it went for 21k
bottom line do you want to haggle or buy........if its on at 15k he has to learn fast and hard that he'll be lucky to see 14k...you do that buy hitting him with a low offer first...in the ned he'll be glad to see £13,900!
but you sound desperate already.......yo go in with that attitude and its gonna cost you £15k

consider resale....cars on at 15...should go for 14 but you're a ***** and pay 15.
resale, you put it on at 12 when you are basing that on the 15 you paid....its hsould really be on at 11 and get a non-***** buy it at 10.........you just chucked away a stash of cash because you were "in a hurry"
haggle now or pay later
