Whilst Gatso cameras are able to record oncoming violations they are only approved for following violations. Stupidly a growing number of Gatsos are set to flash oncoming violations as a deterrent; but as a deterrent to what Im not sure. Keeping your eyes on the road perhaps?

The reason why GATSOs were to take a photo from behind was precisely so they didn't fire a flash in the face of an oncoming driver. It was a safety related issue.
Now that the scamera partnerships have become nothing but mechanisms to control motorists safety is no longer a concern, as can be seen by the rising number of deaths on our roads, and so they are more than willing to fire a flash in your face.
Their next step, in view of the increase in road deaths last year, is going to be to "hide" the cameras again. So those that have been painted bright yellow and moved out from behind signs and other disguises are going to be hidden again. In truth they will probably not hide the current ones but use this as an excuse to add additional hidden ones as their profit margins are getting a bit tight.
Doing this is a bit like putting 2 cameras in a village and seeing the road deaths increase and so asserting that the reason is because not enough cameras not enough cameras were put in place and that what is needed is 2 more. The possibility that the cameras caused the deaths is carefully hidden under the media hype. The people driving this are nutters, but we are even nuttier for letting them get away with it.
