A friend of mine received a NIP (within time etc) demanding to know who was driving at the time (Speed Camera). It happened to be a friend of his, so he contacts his friend & his friend says send it in with his name etc - basically cops to it as the speed was not excessive etc. That was a few months ago & the friend's m8 has heard zilch.

Anyone know what the spec is in a case like this? Does the first NIP mean that any subsequent NIP (to the person actually driving)is unnecessary? Or have the police in this case mucked up? Or will he still get a summons? Or what?



Thanks for any pointers as it's a "cruel & unusual punishment" to be kept waiting so long IMHO

Well I have recently received one of those lovely letters from the MET asking me who was driving my car when it got caught on Camera speeding - alas it was me

I sent it back telling them that it was me and I received my points (3) and fine (60 quid) notification back within 3 days - how's that for efficiency!

Sounds to me as if you may have got away with an administration error. They must have originally had your car on camera speeding otherwise why else would they bother to send the original letter?

Puff, If they(you ) got the NIP. The police have 6 months to 'do' you. There have been a number of occasions where the summons letter appears a week before the 6 months are up

Your mate has a while longer to wait, alas.

The govt are considering dropping the 6 month rule, so that they have as long as they like do 'do' you. This is because if the number of speeding prosecutions grow exponentially(as they will) they won't be able to process all the paperwork in time. All together now, "Ahhh shame'

I have a related question:

I got flashed the other day, not excessively speeding, about 52mph in a 40mph zone.

Now if I receive the NIP, my Mother says that she will say she was driving.

Is that okay? I have a Toyota Supra Twin Turbo, and my mother is, er, 68!? Will that raise any eyebrows?!

Probably will raise a few "wow i wish that was my mum" coments but more importantly would she been insured to drive your car at the time of incident.

My last encounter.

Driving the wife`s car - Received NIP - I asked for the photo which took an age to arrive (I knew it was me but just played dumb - not too difficult !)Photo showed a beautiful shot of the rear with no clue as to who the driver was.....what to do ? - read the small print on the form which said the Road Traffic Act required the driver to be identified otherwise they would do the registered keeper. Chickened out and coughed up although the wife did offer to take the wrap. All in all took six months to resolve.

Unfortunately as long as the Police serve the NIP to the registered keeper within the time limit, it is correct that it may be up to six months before the driver hears anything. AFAIK.
